Senior Executive Service

Defence is seeking a high-performing senior executive to fill the critical role of Deputy Secretary Strategy, Policy and Industry. Reporting directly to the Secretary of Defence, the Deputy Secretary provides direct information, advice and assistance to Defence Ministers, the Chief of the Defence Force, Service Chiefs and other members of the Defence Senior Executive. As a leader in the strategic centre Deputy Secretary Strategy, Policy and Industry works closely with the Vice Chief Defence Force, Associate Secretary and the Chief Finance Officer to guide our department's direction and closely support our Ministers.
The Deputy Secretary leads an integrated workforce including the Australian Defence Force, Australian Public Servants and contractors to shape Defence strategy, promote Australia's international Defence relationships, provide robust advice to optimise the benefits of Government's investment in Defence, and enable industry to deliver ADF capability. The position will lead four Divisions and be responsible for leading complex and challenging cultural and organisational reform including building a flexible and skilled workforce and managing talent. Embedding a 'One Defence' approach as outlined in the First Principles Review, the Deputy Secretary will seek further opportunities for continuous improvement. A team player committed to working across government, with industry and with international partners in pursuit of the national interest, the incumbent will always remain cognisant of the legislative and ethical frameworks in which they operate.
Engagement may be negotiated on an ongoing or non-ongoing basis. To be eligible, applicants must be Australian citizens. This is a security-designated position and the successful applicant will be required to hold or obtain a Positive Vetting security clearance.
