The Opportunity
This role reports to the Engineering Manager where they will design, implement and maintain embedded software and applications used in AVI's product suite. The successful candidate will also lead complex software components and oversee the release and maintenance of all engineering documentation. The role offers the opportunity to contribute to meaningful, real‐world work in an environment where safety, reliability and professional standards are essential. You'll be part of a team delivering technically complex outcomes with clear expectations and support.
What You'll Be Doing
* Design, develop and maintain embedded software for AVI hardware platforms;
* Lead implementation of key software features, modules and systems across projects;
* Contribute to software architecture, design patterns and system-level decision-making;
* Perform code reviews and provide technical oversight to ensure code quality and compliance;
* Write clean, efficient and well-documented code using C/C++ and other relevant languages;
* Lead software testing, debugging and root cause analysis for complex issues;
* Maintain and improve build systems, version control practices and release workflows;
* Assist with product integration, including interfacing with hardware, firmware and cloud components;
* Support junior engineers and graduates through mentorship and skill development;
* Document technical decisions, software processes and system architecture clearly;
* Collaborate with engineering, support and operations teams to ensure successful deployments;
* Promote continuous improvement through process refinement and adoption of best practices.

Technical, Regulatory & Mandatory Requirements
Some roles at AVI operate in highly regulated, safety‐critical environments. For these positions, specific qualifications, certifications or specialist experience are required.
Mandatory Requirements
* Tertiary qualification in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
* Professional accreditation (e.g. CPEng)
* 7+ years' experience in direct interaction with customer, software project management, software architecture and design, embedded system bring‐up with Linux, boot loader (u-boot), Devicetree development, C scripting (bash, python)
These requirements are essential due to regulatory, security, safety or operational obligations.
Highly Desirable / Specialist Experience
* Ability to build systems (Buildroot, Yocto)
* System engineering of embedded devices running Linux
* Test automation with embedded devices
