The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.

Your Impact

As a vital member of the Care & Protection, Family Law Practice, you'll play a key role in providing culturally appropriate legal advice and representation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients in Care & Protection and Family Law matters. Deliver high-quality, ethical, and effective legal services while supporting early intervention, outreach, and community education initiatives. Each day, you will:

* Provide high-quality, culturally appropriate legal advice and representation to Aboriginal clients, including complex cases and court appearances.
* Support and mentor other solicitors, providing specialist advice and leadership within the team.
* Research, prepare briefs, and maintain up-to-date knowledge of Care & Protection and Family Law, case law, and legal developments.
* Manage a diverse and busy caseload, coordinating court schedules, diaries, and files efficiently and professionally.
* Work collaboratively across ALS teams and with external stakeholders, fostering productive interagency and intra-office relationships.
* Ensure all duties are ethical, comply with ALS policies, and may require regional, metropolitan, and interstate travel.

Your Story & Strengths

You are an accomplished and driven legal leader with a deep understanding of the cultural, social, and historical factors shaping the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. You combine exceptional legal expertise with a strong commitment to justice, community impact, and mentoring the next generation of solicitors. Key strengths include:

* Hold appropriate legal qualifications and a current NSW Practising Certificate, with 5+ years' experience in Care & Protection law.
* Demonstrated commitment to social justice and culturally respectful service for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients and communities.
* Strong expertise in Care & Protection law, including contemporary practice, procedure, and high-quality legal representation.
* Excellent written, oral, research, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage complex workloads and meet deadlines.
* Ability to mentor and supervise solicitors while working autonomously and collaboratively within a team.
* Willingness and ability to travel regionally, metropolitan, and interstate as required.

Our Journey Together

At ALS, you'll find a career that truly matters, one where your work has purpose and impact every day. We are proud to offer a supportive and rewarding environment with a range of generous benefits, including:

* Not-for-profit salary packaging to reduce your tax burden, which means you get to keep more of your hard-earned money in your pocket
* Annual leave loading of 17.5%, ensuring that you are rewarded for your time off and can enjoy a well-deserved break.
