Overview
The Senior Legal Counsel (Indigenous Targeted) provides expert, risk-based legal advice and strategic support to the University across major capital projects and institutional initiatives, including UNSW's New Campus Development Plan. The role focuses on complex construction matters with supplementary expertise in planning, property, and commercial law. It operates with a high degree of autonomy, partnering with senior stakeholders to mitigate legal risk, shape contracts and dispute resolution strategies, and ensure compliance across the project life cycle. The position reports to the Head of Commercial & Real Estate Law and has no direct reports.
Responsibilities
* Provide expert, risk-based legal advice on major capital projects and institutional initiatives, including construction, planning, property, and commercial matters.
* Mitigate legal risk and shape contracts, dispute resolution strategies, and compliance across the project life cycle.
* Collaborate with senior stakeholders and internal teams to support UNSW's New Campus Development Plan.
* Operate with a high degree of autonomy within the role's scope and constraints.
Qualifications
* At least eight years' post-qualification experience with strong expertise in complex construction law.
* Eligibility to practise in NSW.
* Ideally experience in property, planning and environment law, and familiarity with AS and NSW Government construction contracts.
Employment Details
* Part-time (3 days per week, 0.6 FTE), continuing (permanent) role.
* Hybrid/flexible working arrangements.
