About the Role

Safety leadership in marine operations is non-negotiable. At the Port of Portland, safety is not simply a practice, it is actively led, reinforced, and continuously improved.

We are looking for an experienced maritime leader to take on the role of Harbour Master / Marine Manager, leading safe operations across the Port.

You will drive a safety-first culture, lead marine operations, ensure legislative compliance, and manage critical systems that support port security, emergency preparedness, and operational performance.

As part of the leadership team, you will contribute to strategic planning and infrastructure investment, support workforce capability and succession planning, and build strong relationships across industry, government, and community.

This is a hands-on leadership opportunity for someone who brings a commitment to safety, maritime expertise, and is passionate about building capability, influencing outcomes, and delivering long term impact.

Key Responsibilities

Lead with safety as the highest priority, fulfilling legislated Harbour Master duties, ensuring compliance with all marine, safety and environment legislation, regulations and industry best practice.

Lead and manage marine operations including pilotage, towage, vessel scheduling, port security, emergency response and marine asset readiness.

Inspire and lead teams, promoting an inclusive, safety-first culture that values collaboration and continuous safety improvement.

Drive strategic planning for marine infrastructure, capital works, fleet renewal, and technology upgrades.

About You

You are a confident and collaborative leader who brings a strong commitment to safety, strategic growth, and team development. You're proactive, solutions-focused and lead by example. You promote an inclusive, respectful, environment where people feel valued and empowered.

Your previous experience in a senior marine leadership role and strong understanding of marine legislation, operational safety systems, and regulatory compliance will contribute to your success in this role.

The successful candidate will hold, or be eligible to obtain, a valid Harbour Master Licence and a Master Class 1 Certificate of Competency (or equivalent). Experience in port security and emergency management is desirable.
