The Legal Advice and Legislation Branch is seeking highly skilled and motivated applicants to fill multiple expected vacancies at the Legal 1 (APS 6 and Executive Level 1) level on an ongoing and non-ongoing basis across several practice areas including public and administrative law and legislation development. The key duties of the position include Senior Lawyer (Executive Level 1) Senior Lawyers have the ability and experience to undertake very complex or sensitive matters under the supervision and broad direction of a Principal Lawyer. Senior Lawyers are expected to exercise a considerable degree of independence and contribute to the leadership of their teams, and generally have supervisory responsibilities. In addition, work undertaken at this level, depending on the practice area, may include: Preparing accurate solutions-based legal advice in relation to a range of legislative and non-legislative programs delivered by the Department of Health and Aged Care, Drafting legislative instruments and providing legal support to clients within the Department of Health and Aged Care developing primary or delegated legislation, Developing and maintaining strong working relationships with clients and external legal providers, Undertaking initial reviews of the work of junior lawyers, before it is second-counselled by a Principal Lawyer, Briefing senior executives, and Building team capacity and culture. Government Lawyer (APS 6) Under the supervision of more senior lawyers, key responsibilities of the role may include: Legal research, Preparing advice on less complex legal matters, including in relation to a range of legislative and non-legislative programs delivered by the Department of Health and Aged Care, Drafting simple legislative instruments and providing legal support to clients within the Department of Health and Aged Care developing primary or delegated legislation, Assisting with responses on complex matters, Developing and maintaining relationships with stakeholders and external providers, Taking ownership of legal matters with wider impact, Resolving less complex matters with limited direction, and This role may also have supervisory responsibilities.
