About the role
As a Senior Lawyer at Basic Rights Queensland, you are responsible for providing advice, casework and representation in the Discrimination, Employment and Human Rights team.
You are valued for experience in your area, with a focus on employment law, and your ability to support the Managing Lawyer who guides team members to deliver outcomes and advocacy for vulnerable people in Queensland navigating complex legal systems.
Direct client work - delivering quality and inclusive services that have a meaningful impact and are responsive to client / community need.
Practice supervision - overseeing processes and practices that comply with funding, accreditation and risk-management requirements, and leading a team that lives our values, focuses on performance, and has impact.
Community / organisation- engaging with the community to leverage and amplify our impact, while supporting operational, administrative and sustainable practices.
Key Responsibilities
Providing advice, casework, representation, holistic personal support and / or specialist referrals to address clients' industrial, legal and other issues, with a focus on complex matters and / or especially vulnerable clients.
Maintaining up to date knowledge, analytical skills and practice in your field of speciality.
Participating in community legal education, research, development of submissions and / or systemic advocacy projects to improve systems for vulnerable clients.
Recording client data accurately, maintaining high quality notes and case work records and being prepared to demonstrate that the needs of clients are adequately addressed.
Following client service and administrative practices of BRQ, including the BRQ Policy Manual and the NACLC Risk Management Guide.
Following strategies and policies that protect clients' rights and ensure quality standards, and constantly improve and innovate in service delivery.
When required (and where possible), exercising responsibilities as a 'Nominated Person' under the CLCA Risk Management Guide (such as when the Manager is absent or unavailable).
Supporting the Manager to review client services and deliverables, including by supporting the checking of advice, or supporting file reviews / reflective practice with team members.
Supporting the Manager in training, induction and supervision of staff, students and volunteers.
Supporting the Manager to ensure staff performance and fostering professional growth for individual team members to ensure a safe working environment.
Contributing to stakeholder engagement and training to promote our services, build partnerships, and advocate for key issues.
Supporting strong relationships with the women's services, legal, community and industrial sectors and ensuring collaborative referrals within and outside BRQ.
Other duties as directed by the CEO / Director / Manager.
To succeed in this role, you need :
Tertiary qualifications in Law.
Proven or potential management capabilities in the community or legal services sector.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain strong relationships.
Knowledge and practical experience of relevant areas of legal practice (discrimination, employment and human rights law).
Experience or potential to manage personnel, including performance management and fostering professional growth.
Highly desirable 2+ years experience in employment law; and unsupervised practising certificate.
