The Role
This role would suit a person with strong telecommunications and networking skills and is keen to learn more about how an optical network is managed and maintained. The Optical Network Technician will be responsible for assisting in fault diagnostics and restoration; requiring the ability to work independently and self‐sufficiently to solve problems and issues as they arise. The role will require travel, sometimes at limited notice, for training, fault troubleshooting, maintenance and deployments as well as being part of an on‐call roster, to support AARNet's network after hours.
This role can be based in Melbourne, Brisbane or Sydney.
Responsibilities
* Identify, troubleshoot, diagnose and resolve faults on the AARNet optical network.
* Install new optical equipment, perform upgrades, commission new services.
* Develop and maintain documentation on the AARNet optical network.
* Work with and build effective relationships with a range of support teams including vendors, customers and colleagues to identify the cause of faults and work towards a resolution.
* Liaise with external suppliers, providers, and partners to ensure prompt resolution of faults.
* Analyse the root cause of faults and instigate solutions.
* Ensure network availability and performance to meet Service Level Agreements.
* Assist with the testing and development of tools and resources to manage AARNet Optical Network and improve Incident Management.
* Participate in an on‐call roster within the Network Operations Group for out of hours incident response.
* Travel to data centres, CEVs and customer sites as required for training, fault troubleshooting, maintenance and deployment of optical equipment.
Expertise, experience & qualifications
* Degree in Engineering/Telecommunications or a related field or relevant industry experience.
* An understanding and experience working with optical fibre networks.
* Incident, change, and problem management.
* Significant experience with operational processes and procedures including electronic communication, documentation and ticket systems; and planned installations and maintenance.
* Must be able to lead and work collaboratively across physical locations.
* Demonstrated problem‐solving and troubleshooting skills.
* Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills are required.
* Previous telecommunications experience as a network technician is desirable.
* Australian Citizen.
* Full Australian Driver's License.
* First Aid Certificate and/or Remote First Aid Certificate desirable.
