Role
Chief Counsel Portfolio (CCP) is a dynamic, professional and diverse legal practice, managed to foster a positive and inclusive workplace culture. The CCP includes:
- Chief Counsel Office
- AFP Legal (Legal Operations Team and Legal Corporate Team)
- Criminal Assets Litigation (CAL North Team and CAL South Team)
The portfolio is geographically dispersed across six capital cities and is managed by the Chief Counsel; each legal team is managed by a General Counsel.
AFP Legal Corporate
The AFP Legal Corporate team provides legal advice and litigation services to support operational law enforcement activities of the AFP, including administrative, operational, commercial and employment law matters.
Applications are sought for the role of Legal Team Leader - AFP Legal Corporate – Employment and Dispute Resolution Law Team. As a Team Leader, you will develop people, manage change and influence behaviours to create a respectful and inclusive culture. 
You will deliver core responsibilities in line with AFP values, leadership philosophy, reform agendas, business plans and your Performance Development Agreement.
What will you do?
The Legal Team Leader – Corporate (Employment and Dispute Resolution) requires strong management and leadership skills along with substantial technical expertise. Responsibilities include providing timely, well-written legal advice across employment and litigation matters, managing claims, civil litigation, coronial inquests and industrial disputes against the AFP, and advising on employment law and industrial relations including enterprise agreements, entitlements, disciplinary matters and termination of employment.
The role is expected to:
- Supervise a diverse team (including geographically dispersed members)
- Manage the team’s workflow and priorities aligned with CCP and AFP priorities
- Conduct or supervise complex matters with minimal supervision
- Represent the AFP in high-level discussions and negotiations with external stakeholders
- Progress legislative, governance and policy development
- Contribute to knowledge and information management initiatives
- Collaborate with Coordinators, General Counsels and Chief Counsel to achieve CCP objectives
Essential Requirements 
- Australian citizenship at time of application
- Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) clearance or ability to obtain one
- Current practicing certificate
- Demonstrated experience in employment law
- Demonstrated ability to lead a team
Desirable Requirements
The following skills and/or experience would be highly regarded:
- Minimum AFP Band level 7 (equivalent to APS EL1)
- Minimum of 5 years post admission experience
Additional Information 
- This role is located in Canberra; applicants should be based in Canberra. Interstate applicants must be willing to relocate at their own cost.
