Overview
The Alfred Pathology Service (APS) is the largest public pathology laboratory network in Victoria, providing integrated diagnostic capabilities across five units: Anatomical Pathology, Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, Microbiology, and Human Molecular Pathology. Alfred Health delivers care across Melbourne’s inner southeast and, upon final approval, will transfer to Bayside Health in 2026 following a merger with regional health services. This permanent, full time position offers an 80-hour fortnight (80 hrs per f/n).
Position Summary
The Medical Laboratory Technician rotates through various sections of the Unit, working as part of a laboratory team to process histology and cytology specimens. Primary responsibilities include:
- Specimen reception duties including case registration, specimen distribution, and organizing send-away tests
- Laboratory duties such as specimen preparation, assisting at specimen cut-up, tissue processing, embedding, microtomy and staining
- Reagent preparation including QC checks, record keeping, inventory management
- Inward goods receiving and maintaining stocks of supplies and consumables
- Laboratory equipment maintenance, service and calibration
- Filing of microscope slides, paraffin blocks and patient records
- General laboratory duties including cleaning and decontamination of equipment and surfaces
- Participation in rotating rosters
About You
Qualifications Required:
- Minimum of Diploma of Applied Science (Medical Laboratory), Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Laboratory Technology or Laboratory Operations, or equivalent
Experience and Skills Required:
- Previous experience in a pathology laboratory
- Previous experience with histological techniques
