As part of a Disaster Recovery Team, the Birdie's Tree Senior Clinician will be responsible for providing a community mental health response to infants, young children, their families, and communities in areas affected by natural disasters. This will include the delivery of high-level mental health services, inclusive mental health promotion, prevention, and early intervention.

About the service
There is a natural recovery period for individuals who experience psychological distress during and following disasters. Most people are restored to their previous level of psychological and social functioning within weeks or a few months of the event. The prevalence of disaster-associated mental health disorders (typically Post‐Traumatic Stress Disorder and Major Depression) varies from one disaster to another, however research suggests around 33% of those people exposed to significant disaster‐related trauma could be expected to need mental health care.
Responsibilities
* Provide mental health, alcohol and other drugs services to consumers who are at risk of developing severe mental health disorders or experiencing mild to moderate mental health problems as a direct result of a disaster.
* Consult with service providers working with individuals impacted by a disaster across the catchment to support appropriate referral and early intervention.
* Community education and information regarding mental health wellbeing and resilience following a disaster through attendance at key community activities throughout the relevant HHS.
* Enhance referral and linkage to mental health support and treatment services through attendance at key community activities and opportunistic intervention and support.
Requirements
* Occupational Therapy: applicant must hold a tertiary degree.
* Psychology: applicant must possess a four-year degree in Psychology.
* Speech Pathology: applicant must hold at least a tertiary degree. All positions above are required to have AHPRA registration.
* Social Work: applicant must hold at least a tertiary degree. AASW accredited Mental Health Social Worker is highly regarded.
* While not mandatory, eligibility for appointment as an Authorised Mental Health Practitioner under the Mental Health Act 2016 would be well regarded.
* This position requires the incumbent to operate a class "C" motor vehicle.
* Travel across the THHS may be a requirement of this position in commercial and/or light aircraft and 4WD vehicles.
