About The Division And Role
Victorian Power System Analysis is accountable for planning the transmission system, making network investment decisions and connecting new generators and loads in Victoria, and ensuring these investments don't adversely impact the power system as a whole.
The department plays a key role in successfully navigating the energy future by determining and procuring investment in the best interest of consumers, and by acting as a trusted advisor for Victorian Government.
The Senior Engineer will lead power system analysis to ensure the resilience and performance of the Victorian network. They will assess network limitations, monitor performance and compliance, develop base cases, and provide advice to support a safe, secure and reliable electricity supply. The role involves independent work, mentoring junior staff, and coordinating consultants and contractors as needed.
The position has the flexibility to be based out of any of our offices in Australia – Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth & Hobart. Quarterly travel will be required if residing out of Victoria.
What You Will Be Doing
* Independently analyse the Victorian transmission network using specialised simulation tools to assess capability, limitations and performance.
* Lead the integration and quality assurance of new and updated power system models.
* Prepare high-quality reports, planning advice, presentations and briefing materials.
* Coach and support junior staff, including peer review and technical guidance.
* Manage multiple projects and shifting priorities, escalating risks to senior staff as needed.
* Drive process improvements and work with stakeholders to ensure consistent messaging and effective resolution of system performance issues.
What You Will Bring To The Role
Education/Certificates
Tertiary qualifications in Electrical Engineering with a discipline relevant to power systems and at least 5 years of relevant post-graduate experience.
Experience & Knowledge
* Experience in electricity transmission network planning across jurisdictional, short, medium and long term horizons.
* Strong understanding of AEMO's Victorian Planning functions, NEM operations and relevant rules and laws.
* Proficiency in transmission network analysis and interpreting studies, using tools such as PSS/E, PowerFactory or PSCAD.
* Experience leading small work packages and guiding junior staff to deliver quality outcomes.
* Knowledge of transmission system operation and energy markets; programming/automation skills (Python, Fortran) are desirable.
* Strong interpersonal, negotiation and problem-solving skills, with the ability to prepare high-quality reports for senior stakeholders.
