About Us
Dog Salon Pagewood is a premier dog training and behaviour modification service in Sydney, renowned for achieving exceptional, long‑lasting results using science‑based, positive reinforcement methods. We are expanding our expert team and seeking an industry leader who can handle complex cases and train all breeds with expertise and empathy.
The Opportunity
We are looking for a highly experienced and certified Dog Trainer and Canine Behaviour Specialist to join our elite team. This is not a junior position; we require a professional with a proven track record of successfully managing a diverse range of behavioural challenges and a deep understanding of canine psychology and learning theory. You will be responsible for designing and implementing advanced, individualised training programs and mentoring both clients and potentially junior staff.
Key Responsibilities
* Behaviour Modification: Conduct detailed assessments and develop comprehensive, customised behaviour modification plans for complex issues such as aggression, severe anxiety, fear‑based reactions, and compulsive behaviours in dogs of all breeds.
* Training Program Design & Execution: Design and deliver both one‑on‑one and group training sessions, focusing on advanced obedience, off‑leash reliability, and specialized skills.
* Client Education & Support: Mentor and coach dog owners, providing clear instructions and ongoing support to ensure they can confidently reinforce positive behaviour and continue training at home.
* Case Management & Documentation: Maintain meticulous records of client progress, adjust training methodologies as needed, and collaborate with veterinarians or other animal behaviourists when necessary.
* Mentorship (if applicable): Provide guidance and professional development to less experienced dog trainers within the organisation.
* Industry Expertise: Stay abreast of the latest research, methodologies, and industry standards in canine behaviour and training.
Skills and Qualifications
Required
* Extensive Experience: Minimum of 5-8 years of professional, hands‑on experience in dog training and behaviour modification, specifically working with a wide variety of breeds and temperaments.
* Certification: Certification from a recognised dog training or behaviour organisation (e.g., CPDT‑KA/KSA, IAABC, or a formal qualification in Animal Behaviour like a Diploma or Bachelor's degree).
* In‑depth Knowledge: A deep understanding of canine learning theory, body language, and communication, with a commitment to using humane, science‑based, and positive reinforcement training methods.
* Problem‑Solving Skills: Exceptional analytical and problem‑solving abilities to identify the root causes of behavioural problems and develop targeted solutions.
* Communication Skills: Outstanding verbal and non‑verbal communication skills, capable of building strong rapport with both dogs and their owners, even in challenging situations.
* Physical Fitness: Physically capable of standing/moving for extended periods, lifting up to 20kg, and safely handling dogs of all sizes and energy levels.
* Logistics: Current driver's licence and access to a reliable vehicle for in‑home consultations or transport of dogs (if required).
* Canine First Aid and CPR certification.
* Experience in a leadership or mentoring role.
* Specialisation in areas such as service dog preparation, agility, or detection work.
