Are you ready to shape the future of Australian livestock? neXtgen Agri International is seeking a Livestock Consultant who combines deep technical expertise with exceptional communication skills and an unrelenting work ethic to help producers achieve transformational results. We're looking for someone who is as comfortable sorting their way through a bull catalogue as they are working out a feedlot ration for some lambs. Someone who can stand in front of a group and deliver as well as have critical conversations around the kitchen table or sheep or cattle yards. We need someone who'll roll up their sleeves, work whatever hours it takes, and go the extra mile because they genuinely believe what we do can transform farming businesses. If that sounds like you, this could be the role that defines your career.
Who we are
We're a team of passionate professionals transforming the livestock industry across Australia, New Zealand, and beyond. Our consultants are trusted advisors to both stud breeders and commercial producers, and we're privileged to contribute to industry-leading research and development projects.
We see ourselves as part of our clients' teams - their wins are our wins. With 11 consultants across Australia and New Zealand, you'll join a collaborative group that's genuinely changing how the industry approaches livestock improvement.
The role
As a Livestock Consultant, you'll be the go-to person for producers who want to take their operations to the next level. You'll combine deep technical knowledge with outstanding people skills and an uncompromising work ethic. This position is being focussed in a region where we currently don't have a consultant based and will have a growing number of local clients. The role will also take on aspects of national projects and may work with clients outside of the region.
Essential qualifications & experience
1. Education: Degree in Agriculture, Animal Science, Veterinary Science, or related field
2. Industry Knowledge: Deep understanding of Australian livestock production systems across multiple enterprises
3. Technical Expertise: Strong foundation in breeding, nutrition, animal health, and production management
4. Communication Skills: Demonstrated ability to write compelling, clear technical content that gets results
5. Technology Proficiency: Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, familiarity with data collection systems, livestock databases and management software
6. Location: Based in or willing to relocate to Southern NSW / Northern Vic
Highly desirable attributes
1. Multi-species Experience: Knowledge across sheep, cattle, and goats with deep practical understanding in at least two of these
2. Consulting Experience: Proven track record in livestock consulting or advisory work
3. Research Experience: Involvement in R&D projects or industry initiatives
4. Extension Background: Experience in delivering educational programs or producer group facilitation
5. Genetic Evaluation: Experience with modern genetic selection tools and breeding value interpretation
6. Industry Networks: Established relationships in the livestock industry
7. Business Acumen: Understanding of agricultural business, market dynamics, and financial analysis
Your core responsibilities
1. Strategic livestock consulting:
Develop comprehensive breeding programs, production strategies, and business plans aligned with client objectives
2. Hands-on technical work:
Analyse breeding values, design selection programs, optimise genetic and production decisions across diverse farming systems
3. Client relationship management:
Build and maintain long-term partnerships with key producers and industry organisations
4. Communication leadership:
Write compelling reports, proposals, and industry publications that get read and acted upon - from on-farm recommendations to industry conference presentations
5. Industry engagement:
Lead producer groups, present at conferences and represent neXtgen Agri at industry events across Australia
6. Project management:
Oversee complex, multi-phase projects from conception to completion, working with research institutions on industry-shaping projects
7. Team collaboration:
Work closely with our consultant team to deliver exceptional client outcomes and contribute to our collective expertise across 11 consultants
What makes you the ideal candidate?
1. Genuine passion for livestock improvement
This isn't something we can teach - you need to genuinely light up when talking about better genetics, improved production systems, enhanced animal welfare, and helping producers succeed. Whether it's sheep, cattle, or goats, you see the potential in every management decision and breeding choice.
1. Exceptional work ethic and drive
This role demands someone who'll do whatever it takes to get the job done properly. You're the type who finishes late and starts early and genuinely goes the extra mile because the outcome matters to you.
1. Outstanding writing and communication skills
You can take complex livestock concepts and make them accessible and actionable. Your reports don't just sit in filing cabinets - they get read, shared, and implemented. You're equally comfortable writing for farmers, researchers, or industry publications.
1. Natural leadership
People trust your judgement and look to you for guidance. You can walk into a room of experienced producers and earn respect through your knowledge, authenticity, and genuine care for their success. You lead by example, not just by title.
1. Sharp analytical mind
You see patterns others miss and can translate complex data into clear, actionable recommendations. You understand that the best theory means nothing if it doesn't work in practice on real farms with real constraints.
1. A genuine service mindset toward farming
You genuinely want to help farming families be at the top of their game and love the opportunity to work alongside them to achieve great things.
