Sydney Local Health District is seeking a highly motivated Advanced Trainee – Public Health Medicine to join the Public Health Unit at RPA Hospital

There are 2 accredited Advanced Trainee- Public Health Medicine positions available. This is a full-time position.

The full-time Public Health Medicine Advanced Trainee position(s) provides medical and public health support to the Sydney Local Health District Public Health Unit and is accredited for training with the Royal Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine (AFPHM).

What You Will Be Doing

This position provides a unique opportunity to develop expertise in a range of public health areas, including communicable diseases, epidemiology, environmental health and immunisation.

The position may include one placement of at least six months' duration in external locally-based organisations that will have a focus on health equity. Example of a placement arrangement may include 6-months in the PHU, followed by 6-months with the Central and Eastern Sydney Primary Health Network or Aboriginal Health and Medical Research Council. Medical officers may be placed elsewhere depending on availability of supervision and individual training requirements.

Responsibilities Include
* Contributing to the overall operational responsibilities of the Public Health Unit (PHU)
* Providing public health medical advice and support on matters related CD outbreaks, including policy, protocols and processes.
* Providing public health medical advice on other core operational areas, including environmental health, epidemiology, immunisation and infectious diseases.
* Participating in a PHU after-hours on-call roster
* Preparing reports and correspondence and undertaking data management on notifiable disease databases.
* Liaising with PHU and Population Health staff, local clinicians and other agencies concerning other public health matters, as delegated by the Clinical Director.
* Working towards obtaining competence, skills, and knowledge in public health medicine for the purposes of the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine training program

The SLHD Public Health Unit

The main role of the Public Health Unit relates to its statutory responsibilities under the NSW Public Health Act 2010 and associated regulations to protect the health of the population with regards to infectious diseases, environmental health, and immunisation.

In addition, the Public Health Unit conducts applied and translational research across a range of areas of public health, including those listed above and also epidemiology, surveillance and emergency management. We collaborate with researchers at NSW Health, public health units in other districts, universities, laboratories, hospitals, and other government agencies.

The SLHD Public Health Unit is located within the King George V building on the grounds of the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. Royal Prince Alfred is the principal teaching hospital of the University of Sydney.

* MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
* Master of Public Health or equivalent.
* At least 3 years' postgraduate clinical experience.
* Confirmed eligibility for AFPHM training program, or existing AFPHM trainee.
* Demonstrated commitment to public health medicine as a career and a clear understanding of the public health training medicine training pathway in Australia.
* Demonstrated commitment to working within multidisciplinary teams with excellent written and verbal communication skills
* Commitment to addressing health inequity and strengthening cultural competence.
