Group Leader - Supercomputing Operations
The Group Leader Supercomputing Operations works within broad guidelines to deliver world-class, secure supercomputing capability to Defence. The role provides leadership and cohesion across all aspects of operating the supercomputing capability, such as physical infrastructure, software infrastructure, engaging with the research user base, and user training.
The Group Leader is responsible for providing effective, reliable, secure, high-performing, and scalable supercomputing services to meet researchers' specific needs for Defence outcomes. This role will foster a positive culture within the supercomputing team, empowering team members to succeed and proactively building a high-performing team of experts who deliver supercomputing capabilities for Defence.
As the Group Leader, you will need high-standard communication and networking skills. You will develop productive partnerships, work collaboratively, and manage strategic relationships with key stakeholders. Your ability to consult broadly, share information, and facilitate knowledge transfer within the Science and Technology (S&T) enterprise will be crucial. You will also contribute to ongoing self-improvement and professional development.
Position Duties:
1. Lead a team of supercomputing Subject Matter Experts, plan and manage resources, set work priorities, manage workflows, and evaluate business outcomes.
2. Engage proactively with stakeholders and teams to align goals and objectives, ensuring the success of the Supercomputing Branch mission and FIC requirements.
3. Provide leadership and direction to ensure high levels of integration and consistency across Defence Science and Technology management functions.
4. Lead transdisciplinary teams in implementing the Defence Science & Technology enterprise within broad directions.
5. Manage complex workloads within an integrated workforce, promote a culture of scientific excellence, and manage change effectively.
6. Deliver high-quality scientific reports, including briefs, publications, and presentations.
7. Ensure compliance with legislation, regulations, and internal policies.
8. Assess future needs, anticipate priorities, and develop long-term strategic plans.
About our Team
The Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) hosts the Defence Supercomputing Capability, providing Defence and National Security agencies with a secure, multi-tenanted supercomputing ecosystem. This capability supports innovation, science, and technology outcomes through advanced modelling, simulation, data processing, AI, and machine learning. The Supercomputing Branch manages the entire lifecycle of the supercomputing capability, including strategy, engagement, design, technology refresh, operations, user support, and training.
The Supercomputing Executive Branch oversees governance and management of supercomputing capabilities through geographically dispersed, interdisciplinary teams responsible for strategy, policies, and operational practices based on high-level decision-making and global best practices.

Education:
* Academic qualifications in related fields such as Information & Computing Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, or Physical Sciences, or relevant skills and experience.
Experience:
* Experience working within the Australian research environment at an executive level.
* Leading diverse teams in relevant fields.
* Developing and managing supercomputing infrastructure.
* Managing multiple projects simultaneously.
* Holding or able to obtain Negative Vetting 1 Security Clearance (willingness to upgrade to Positive Vetting).
Technical Skills:
* Implementing industry best practices for supercomputing policies and procedures.
* Leading procurement activities.
* Project management.
* Knowledge of supercomputing architectures.
* Knowledge of the Information Security Manual (ISM), Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF), and Defence Security Principles Framework (DSPF).
