Primary objective
The primary objective of this shared role across Alyangula Area School, Umbakumba School, and Angurugu School is to support
the effective delivery of on-country learning experiences for students. The position works closely with schools and the third-party
provider to ensure students are safe, engaged, and able to connect classroom learning with cultural and community-based
experiences on Country.
Context statement
This position operates across the three schools of Groote Eylandt – Alyangula Area School, Umbakumba School, and Angurugu
School. The role is designed to strengthen partnerships between schools, families, the Anindilyakwa community, and a third-party
provider responsible for facilitating on country learning. By supporting both staff and students during excursions, the role helps
ensure that learning on Country is purposeful, safe, and meaningfully integrated into school-based programs. The role will require
travel between sites and excursions, with access to a personal vehicle provided to support mobility as needed.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Support on country learning excursions by assisting the third-party provider in supervising students, managing behaviour, and
ensuring compliance with work health and safety requirements.
2. Represent schools during excursions, acting as the staff representative when an Anindilyakwa staff member is unavailable, and
ensuring activities are rescheduled if no school representative is present.
3. Collaborate in planning and reporting, including attending program planning meetings with third-party provider, supporting
schools in integrating excursion learnings into classroom programs, and assisting with reporting requirements.
4. Coordinate administration and logistics such as distributing and collecting parent/carer consent forms, supporting transport
arrangements when required, and using own vehicle for travel to and from excursions.
5. Strengthen partnerships and professional learning by maintaining open communication between schools and the third-party
providers and providing opportunities for shared professional development.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Experience working in and/or residing in remote Aboriginal communities, and an understanding of, respect for, and desire to
learn about Anindyliakwa culture.
2. Proven ability to build and maintain effective teams, networks and relationships with other agencies and stakeholders and to
work with flexibility.
3. Highly developed interpersonal, negotiation and communication skills with demonstrated ability to influence and engage
multiple stakeholders to deliver program activities in cross-cultural contexts.
4. Knowledge of the On Country Learning program, or the demonstrated ability to acquire and apply such knowledge quickly,
including the key objectives and the underpinning philosophies, and an understanding of both-ways learning.
5. Demonstrated project management, administrative and time management skills.
