The Role
We're searching for a Software Engineer to join our growing engineering team in Melbourne. You'll report to an Engineering Team Lead and work on backend services for Netcraft's Internet exploration and cybercrime detection products.
Responsibilities
* Design and develop new features and improvements, considering performance, reliability, and security.
* Maintain and improve existing systems written in Go, TypeScript, or other languages, ensuring stability, maintainability, and operational reliability.
* Test and document work to a high standard with strong attention to detail.
* Take ownership of system maintenance, operational stability, and incident prevention.
* Respond to issues with urgency, identify root causes, and implement long‐term fixes.
* Identify and resolve scaling bottlenecks, mindful of operating costs.
* Collaborate with other engineering teams to ensure services are well integrated.
* Work with cross‐functional stakeholders to propose, design, and implement solutions that meet business needs.
* Self‐directed and proactive, identifying opportunities to improve systems and processes.
Qualifications
* Experience developing and maintaining production backend systems, ideally with Go or a similar language.
* Ability to work independently and take ownership of services and systems.
* Strong attention to detail, especially with production systems.
* Proactive mindset and sense of urgency for operational issues or incidents.
* Experience with SQL databases (MySQL, MariaDB), schema design for OLTP and OLAP, and writing/optimising complex queries.
* Familiarity with Unix command‐line tools (sed, grep, AWK), shell scripting, Linux package managers, and configuration management tools such as Puppet.
* Experience with Amazon EC2, S3, RDS, SQS, or equivalent cloud services.
* Solid understanding of computer networking technologies (TCP, IPv4, IPv6, DNS, HTTP, TLS).
* Good written and verbal communication skills.
Bonus
Bonus points for experience with TypeScript, Terraform, Android Emulator, scraper development, async or event‐driven Perl, OpenSearch, OpenAPI, AI tools (e.g., Cursor, Claude), and container technologies like Docker or Kubernetes.
