Burial & Memorialisation Technician – Wollongong City Council

Location: Wollongong, New South Wales

Employment type: Full-time

Salary: $70,532.34 to $77,824.07 (salary package assessed based on skills, experience and qualifications)

Summary: Wollongong City Council is seeking a passionate and energetic Technician to join the Memorial Gardens and Cemeteries team, supporting sites across the Wollongong Local Government Area. This hands-on role involves delivering respectful, high-quality services to the community in a close-knit, supportive team. The role includes grounds maintenance, burial and memorialisation support, and customer service to bereaved families and visitors.

The opportunity

In this role you will contribute to the delivery of exceptional services, infrastructure and facilities for the community, with a focus on Memorial Gardens & Cemeteries. You will work across sites and support burial and memorialisation processes as needed.

Your Work Will Include

- Maintaining beautiful and peaceful grounds through horticultural care and general upkeep
- Supporting burial and memorial operations with professionalism and compassion
- Providing empathetic customer service to grieving families and visitors
- Coordinating with office staff to ensure timely, respectful service delivery and customer requests
- Operating plant and machinery (e.g. excavators and trucks) once training is completed
- Assisting with funeral and memorialisation processes as needed

This is a physically active role requiring fitness and the ability to undertake duties as described in the job description, working outdoors in all weather conditions To support work-life balance, you will work 70 hours over a 9-day fortnight; overtime and weekend work may be offered based on operational requirements.

How You'll Make a Difference

You will deliver high-quality grounds maintenance and operate a variety of plant and equipment (e.g., ride-on mowers and small machinery), performing manual outdoor tasks in all weather conditions. You will work independently and with the team, managing time to meet daily operational needs. A key part of the role is providing compassionate and respectful service to bereaved families and visitors, assisting in burial and memorialisation processes with sensitivity and professionalism.

About You

You are adaptable and thrive in changing conditions. Safety is a priority, and you lead by example and meet WHS standards. You have strong communication skills and a calm, respectful approach to customer service in sensitive environments. You work well in a team, take initiative, are physically fit, comfortable outdoors, and can perform manual labour and operate equipment safely. You are committed to maintaining the dignity and presentation of our Cemeteries and Memorial Gardens facilities.
