Role Overview
Reporting to the CEO, the role seeks a national Principal Solicitor who will act as an in‐house legal counsel providing strategic and practical legal advice and managing specialised legal services across the organisation. The position operates as a standalone legal function responsible for ensuring consistency, quality and alignment of legal advice, including authoritative strategic advice on relevant legislation.
Key Responsibilities
Negotiate and advise on agreements, memoranda of understanding and other arrangements with government agencies and non‐government organisations, ensuring interests are protected and risks are managed.
Prepare, review and negotiate contracts, including high‐value and complex commercial agreements, tender documentation, preferred supplier arrangements and leases.
Manage matters relating to intellectual property rights, address potential infringements and instruct external legal providers when litigation or specialist advice is required.
Conduct legal research on priority issues, contribute to policy development, statutory reporting and parliamentary reporting requirements, and manage legal risks and advice.
Qualifications
* Law degree from an Australian tertiary institution or another legal qualification recognised for admission to legal practice in an Australian jurisdiction.
* Admission to practice as a solicitor in an Australian jurisdiction and eligibility to hold a legal practising certificate.
* Extensive post‐admission experience providing senior‐level legal advice in the public sector or a comparable regulatory environment.
* Excellent conceptual and analytical skills, ability to undertake research, prepare reports and provide strategic advice to senior management, translating complex legal issues into practical solutions.
* Experience drafting, reviewing and negotiating complex contracts and agreements and managing external legal providers, ensuring high‐quality, cost‐effective legal services.
* Experience managing, processing and assessing Freedom of Information Act requests.
* Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing skills and sound judgement and discretion when dealing with sensitive or high‐risk matters.
