Senior Design Manager role on a large‑scale building redevelopment project focused on establishing a fit‑for‑purpose complex for the Territory.
Our client is delivering a large‑scale and complex redevelopment project working with a number of key public and private sector stakeholders. They are now seeking an experienced Senior Design Manager to join the project team for the design completion phase. This is an exciting, high‑profile client‑side role on a key project.
You will manage and lead the project’s design consultant team and peer review consultants, oversee coordination of complex design inputs, and manage key design governance documentation, registers and reports. You will play a critical role in guiding strategic design decisions, resolving complex issues, and representing the project across a range of forums. A key component of the role will also be contributing to team capability development, including mentoring, knowledge sharing and supporting staff who are shadowing the position.
This is a full‑time contract position working on a high‑profile, complex buildings construction project.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide leadership in coordinating design development within the approved project scope, managing inputs from building users, design and technical advisers, and project stakeholders.
- Undertake complex analysis to identify strategic directions, options and actions, including innovative solutions to complex planning and environmental approval matters.
- Oversee infrastructure project management aspects related to design, including early project planning, design process management, contractual requirements, program control, cost control, delivery methodologies, quality and statutory requirements.
- Compile and write high‑quality reports, briefs and other documentation on complex issues relating to infrastructure delivery for the redevelopment.
- Represent the project in internal and external forums as required.
- Manage competing priorities and multiple deadlines, delivering high‑quality outputs and working collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Actively engage in capability development, including mentoring and knowledge sharing with staff and other consultants.
Role Requirements
- Availability for the remainder of the design completion phase, with the position available immediately.
- Background in architecture is preferred, with substantial design management experience on large, complex projects.
- Flexibility to be based interstate, with regular attendance required in the Canberra office and on site.
- Willingness to work under short‑term work orders.
The ideal candidate will have
- Tertiary qualifications in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management or a related discipline.
- Extensive experience in design management of large multi‑disciplinary design teams, ideally within government or major public infrastructure environments.
- Demonstrated strategic and critical thinking, analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to interpret and synthesise information from multiple sources to provide informed advice.
- Robust understanding of best practice design management processes between government and the construction industry, including risk management concepts, standards, methodologies and tools, and workplace health and safety.
- Ability to interpret and apply relevant policies, legislation and procedures to support effective project outcomes.
- Highly developed written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to liaise and negotiate effectively with a broad range of stakeholders (government agencies, contractors, consultants, community).
- Demonstrated commitment to customer service principles and collaborative stakeholder engagement.
- Effective and positive leadership and mentoring capability within a multidisciplinary team, with the ability to operate with a high degree of autonomy and decision‑making authority.
