AUSTRAC is Australia’s financial intelligence unit and anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing (AML/CTF) regulator. We use data, intelligence and analytics to detect and disrupt serious and organised crime, protect the financial system, and support national security outcomes.
Our in-house Legal team plays a critical role in enabling AUSTRAC to deliver on its statutory functions lawfully, effectively and with integrity.
About the Opportunity
We are seeking Lawyers (APS6) and Senior Lawyers (EL1) to join AUSTRAC’s Legal team.
You will provide high-quality legal advice, legislative interpretation and legal risk management across a broad range of complex and sensitive matters. This includes supporting AUSTRAC’s regulatory, intelligence, enforcement and corporate functions.

Work is dynamic and varied, with flexibility to contribute across multiple areas depending on operational priorities.
What You’ll Do
Under broad direction, you will:
* Provide legal advice on regulatory, administrative law and public sector governance matters
* Draft and review legal and legislative documents
* Support enforcement, litigation and compliance activities
* Contribute to AML/CTF policy, law reform and guidance
* Support privacy and Freedom of Information (FOI) functions
* Engage with internal stakeholders, partner agencies and external bodies
* Contribute to legal training and capability uplift across the agency
What We’re Looking For
We are looking for candidates who bring strong legal capability, sound judgement and a collaborative mindset.
Mandatory
* Admission to the Supreme Court of an Australian State or Territory, or the High Court of Australia
* Eligibility to hold a practising certificate
Experience
* Minimum 2+ years post-admission experience (PAE)
* Experience in one or more of the following is highly regarded:
* Statutory interpretation
* Civil penalty or complex litigation
* Regulatory compliance and enforcement
* Privacy and information law (including FOI)
* Contract and procurement
You will also demonstrate the ability to apply expertise, provide sound advice and work effectively across diverse stakeholders.
