Fixed Term (12 Months) up to 1.0FTE Postgraduate Fellow

Applications are invited from suitably qualified medical practitioners for the above position(s) in the Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD). This position will be located at Department of Emergency Medicine at Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospitals.



Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospitals (BMDH) operate as a single hospital across two campuses with two emergency departments, Blacktown campus and Mount Druitt campus. BMDH Emergency Department provides a focus for teaching and research into the acute emergency care of patients and the health and wellbeing of the community as a whole.



Blacktown Emergency Department

The Emergency Department at Blacktown Hospital offers emergency care for patients of all ages, 24 hours a day 7 days a week. The Emergency Department is a level 5 department, (with the hospital being a Level 2 trauma unit) providing treatment of major and minor trauma cases and medical emergencies. It provides a service that ensures the timely, skilled and appropriate management of all patients. Approximately 70000 patients attend the department each year, 20% being paediatric presentations.



Mount Druitt Emergency Department

Mount Druitt Hospital was opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in October 1982 with a capacity of 200 beds. Mount Druitt Emergency Department is classified as level 4 Emergency Department (NSW Health, 2017). As a level 4 ED, Mount Druitt is able to manage a full range of emergency presentations and is capable of transferring critically ill patients via retrieval services. Approximately 40000 presentations to Mount Druitt Emergency each year, with 40% being paediatrics.



Applicants must have Australian Fellowship/Specialist Registration at time of applying.



Essential Requirements for Appointment

1. Possess or be eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship of the Australian College of Emergency Physicians (ACEM) or RACP/PEM or equivalent as provided for in the Staff Specialists (State) Award/ Health Insurance Act 1997. Must have Australian Citizenship or Permanent Australian Residency. Must hold a current NSW Environment Protection Authority license (if applicable)

2. Sound clinical knowledge in Emergency Medicine demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position

3. Effective interpersonal skills that bring out the best in colleagues to resolve conflicts when they arise and to develop and maintain productive working relationships within the team

4. Demonstrate the potential or capability to teach and train effectively at all levels of undergraduate and postgraduate education where required.

5. Able to take responsibility for clinical governance activities, risk management and audit in order to improve the quality of service provision

6. Have the self-awareness to acknowledge where their limits of competence lie and when it is appropriate to refer to other senior colleagues for advice.

7. Strive for continuing improvement in all aspects of work and that of colleagues. Mindful of priorities and high quality, ethical care and standards

8. Commitment of own relevant professional and self-development



Conditions of appointment are in accordance with the Staff Specialists (State) Award.

Selection Criteria



1. Current medical practitioner, registered, or eligible for registration, with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellow of the Australian College of Emergency Medicine (ACEM) and / or Paediatric Emergency Medicine or RACP Fellow paediatrician with extensive Paediatric Emergency Medicine experience at a tertiary level and/or other specialist recognition as provided under the Staff Specialists (State) Award.

2. Demonstrated current clinical practice of a high standard and ability to adapt clinical practice in accordance with contemporary evidence based best practice

3. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management

4. Demonstrated participation in teaching and training at undergraduate and/or post graduate level, including supervision of junior medical staff

5. Demonstrated commitment to continuing self-education and development, including evidence of participation in continuing medical education / continuing professional development.

6. Demonstrated ability to comply with the service objectives of a public health organisation, including the provision of services to the local community, effective utilisation of resources, and preparedness to participate in the provision of health services at an LHD level

7. Preparedness to participate in a hospital, service or LHD on-call roster

8. Evidence of ability to work cooperatively with other staff and practitioners and in a multidisciplinary health care team
