Marine Biological Hazards Researcher
This research position is focused on using AI/ML to predict and mitigate the impact of marine biological hazards induced by climate change.
The researcher will design and develop predictive models to forecast harmful algal blooms and crown-of-thorns starfish outbreaks in semi-enclosed and coastal waters. The models will incorporate multi-source data, including satellite imagery, in-situ sensor networks, and land-sea interaction drivers.
* The ideal candidate will have a strong background in oceanography, environmental science, or computer science, with experience in programming languages such as Python or R.
* They will be able to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary research team.
* A passion for high-impact research and a desire to contribute to the development of predictive models for marine ecosystems are essential.
The research project will involve collaboration with industry partners and the development of an early-warning system for aquaculture managers, coastal engineers, and public health officials.
Key Skills and Qualifications:
* PhD in Oceanography, Environmental Science, Computer Science, or related field.
* Strong background in machine learning and artificial intelligence.
* Programming skills in Python or R.
* Experience working with large datasets.
* Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Benefits:
* Annual living stipend of $42,483.00 p.a.
* Additional package of $25,840 (cost of living allowance, training allowance, travel, publication).
* 6-month industry placement as part of the PhD research studies.
* Compulsory completion of CSIRO internal coursework on advanced data analytics and AI.
