About the Role
The Workshop Senior Technical Officer provides highly skilled design and production services to meet the teaching and research needs of the UNSW School of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications. The role involves translating technical requirements into functional outcomes and overseeing day‐to‐day laboratory and workshop operations.
Responsibilities
• Independently translate raw, verbal technical requirements into functional outcomes. • Oversee the safe, effective and efficient day‐to‐day operation of laboratories and specialist work areas. • Manage technical facilities, ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards. • Lead and mentor one direct report.
Qualifications
* Relevant trade certificate in fitting and machining or equivalent experience, with a minimum of 3 years in a workshop environment.
* Specialist knowledge of manufacturing techniques and equipment (CNC vertical machining centres, CNC lathes, fitting, sheet metal working, welding).
* Ability to interpret technical drawings and schematics and knowledge of SolidWorks and SolidCam or equivalent CAD/CAM software.
* High level of organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects.
* Excellent communication skills and critical analysis of designs.
* Experience estimating costs and fabrication time, including material purchasing.
* Proven ability to work independently, analyse situations, identify risks and problem‐solve while contributing effectively to a team.
