Introduction to 5B and 5B Maverick
5B is an Australian technology business. Our name is a constant reminder of the 5 billion years of sunshine we have left, and motivates us to strive for the simplest, most effective ways to leverage this resource.
We're transforming large-scale solar by building and delivering the 5B Maverick, an innovative prefabricated solution, purpose-built and optimised from first principles to redefine how large-scale solar farms are constructed. The solution is structurally efficient, aerodynamic and gets installed at light speed.
5B was recently awarded AUD 46 million in funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), with a significant portion of this funding dedicated to a large R&D and Product Development program to further optimise the solution and accelerate its delivery.

Primary purpose of the role:
The Project Engineer (PE) supports the Senior Project Engineering Manager and Project Managers by delivering high-quality technical work packages that enable smooth and successful project execution. This includes coordinating and completing PV design packs from early concept to IFC documentation, tracking engineering deliverables across multiple projects, managing technical risks, and ensuring timeframes are met. The role also requires strong communication skills to work effectively with customers, consultants, installation partners and internal 5B teams.
This role is a pathway to a senior engineering position, so the PE will take ownership of elements of the project engineering workflow and help build processes, timelines, strategies and standardisation to support 5B's rapid growth. The PE will also assist with engineering schedules, resource planning and collaborate closely with the technology team to improve 5B's solar solution and integrate it into utility-scale solar farms.
Core accountabilities:
The Project Engineer is responsible for creating, progressing and finalising PV engineering designs, including system layouts, single line diagrams, electrical calculations, BOMs and construction drawings. This work must account for relevant standards, land optimisation, constructability and maintenance needs, while also meeting customer drawing requirements. The role includes performing structural studies, managing external consultants such as electrical engineers and drafters, and supporting Deployment Partners and customers in interpreting designs. The PE may also support pre-sales designs alongside technical sales engineers.
A key focus of the role is driving standardisation and continuous improvement within the project engineering function. This includes developing standard designs with subject matter experts, building processes and frameworks to improve accuracy and efficiency, actioning NCRs, and participating in engineering change management. The PE is expected to ensure engineering outputs are timely, practical, constructible and commercially sound, while maintaining alignment with 5B's broader vision and goals.
The role also involves identifying tasks and dependencies, tracking progress of engineering activities, and collaborating closely with cross-functional teams. This includes providing pricing and design implications to Sales during the bidding process, contributing to risk reviews, and feeding lessons learned and requirements back to the Technology team to support ongoing product improvements.
