Mercy Hospital for Women is a major public tertiary specialist teaching hospital providing complex care in obstetrics, neonatology and gynaecology. The hospital plays a critical role in Victoria's healthcare system, supporting thousands of births annually while contributing to clinical education, research, and innovation in women's and newborn health.
The Role
Alumni Global are proud to be partnering with Mercy Health in the search for an experienced and strategic senior medical leader to join Mercy Hospital for Women as Director of Medical Services.
Reporting operationally to the Executive Director, Mercy Hospital for Women, and professionally to the Chief Medical Officer, this role provides expert leadership in the strategic and operational management of medical services and the medical workforce.
As a key member of the hospital's executive leadership team, the Director of Medical Services will work closely with Clinical Directors, nursing and operational leaders to ensure high-quality, patient‐centred care across all clinical services. You will drive service development, strengthen clinical governance frameworks, and support innovation in the delivery of women's and newborn health services.
The role also plays a central part in building strong partnerships with universities, research institutions, and healthcare networks to support excellence in clinical care, education, and research.
Key Responsibilities
Provide strategic leadership across medical services, clinical governance, and quality and safety systems at Mercy Hospital for Women. The Director of Medical Services will lead and support Clinical Directors and senior clinicians to deliver high‐quality, patient‐centred care while fostering a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement and innovation. The role will oversee the development and implementation of service, quality and business plans aligned with organisational priorities and will provide leadership in medical workforce strategy, including workforce planning, recruitment, credentialing and professional development.
Working closely with the executive leadership team, the Director will strengthen clinical governance frameworks, ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements, and support the ongoing improvement of clinical systems and processes. The role will also build strong partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, including academic institutions and healthcare networks, to advance service development, research, and education in women's and newborn health.
About You
You are a respected senior medical leader with strong clinical credibility and a commitment to collaborative, values‐based leadership.
You bring experience working within complex healthcare environments and the ability to lead multidisciplinary teams while balancing strategic, clinical, and operational priorities.
You will have:
* Registration (or eligibility) as a Medical Practitioner with AHPRA
* Postgraduate qualifications in health services management, business administration, or a related field (or working towards)
* Extensive experience in health service leadership and medical workforce management
* Strong knowledge of clinical governance, quality improvement, and healthcare policy
* Financial management capability and experience managing operational programs
* Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder engagement skills
* Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators (RACMA) or equivalent experience will be highly regarded.
* Experience or understanding of women's and newborn health services will also be considered advantageous.
