- As an APS5 Heritage Officer, you would be part of a diverse and energetic team, delivering on the Australian Government's heritage agenda, including:
- _identifying and assessing places for inclusion in the World, National and Commonwealth Heritage places,_
- _developing and implementing policies and strategies relating to heritage,_
- _helping to protect and promote identified natural, First Nations and other cultural heritage values of listed places,_
- _engaging with a broad range of stakeholders and partners to identify heritage opportunities and risk_s.

**Who we are**
The Heritage, Reef and Ocean Division leads international and domestic elements of the Australian Government's World, National and Commonwealth Heritage business, including the Great Barrier Reef.

The Heritage Branch leads the Australian Government's heritage interests including, in particular, the administration of the World, National and Commonwealth Heritage Lists and developing and delivering heritage policies and strategies. Day to day activities of the branch involve working with First Nations people, state governments, place managers and a broad range of stakeholders in the identification, assessment, protection, management and promotion of the heritage values of listed places. The branch supports the Australian Heritage Council through the Council secretariat and manages Australian Government grant programs.

The following sections within the Heritage Branch perform similar duties consistent with their area of focus: - Natural and First Nations Heritage Section - First Nations Heritage Section - Cultural Heritage Section The Heritage Strategies Section has an overarching role in delivering a range of strategic and administrative activities supporting the work of the Heritage Branch.

**The Job**
The work of a heritage officer is varied, and frequently includes:

- preparing briefings for a range of purposes including statutory decisions,
- representing the Australian Government at meetings,
- providing advice on heritage impacts of proposed developments,
- routine administrative and corporate activities,
- preparing and responding to correspondence.

**What we are looking for**

**Knowledge and experience**
Any combination of the following knowledge and experience would be an advantage:

- qualifications / experience in heritage-related disciplines, such as ecology, history, archaeology, anthropology, sociology, architecture, museum studies etc,
- first nations engagement experience,
- policy and strategy development and implementation experience,
- project management experience,
- other relevant Australian Public Service experience.

**Skills and capabilities**
- effective team members, willing to cooperate with their colleagues to achieve shared goals and develop consistent approaches,
- clear thinkers with excellent writing skills, capable of identifying and presenting arguments based on a range of stakeholder, policy and research inputs,
- lateral thinkers with sound judgement, capable of identifying opportunities and risks,

**Eligibility and other requirements**

**Citizenship** - To be eligible for employment with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water you must be an Australian citizen.

**Security Clearance** - This position does not require a security clearance.
