Head of Department, Student Services (Dean of Students)

Head of Department, Student Services is locally know as Dean of Students at Stretton State College.

The Dean of Students is responsible for monitoring student wellbeing and engagement at school for a Year level.

Provide leadership and strategies for improving student outcomes, including management of attendance, behaviour and uniform processes.

The Dean of Students works with other Heads of Department, Guidance Officers, Deputy Principals and Principals to embed socially just practices in daily school life, incorporating the holistic needs of students.

This temporary vacancy is open to expressions of interest and any extensions to this appointment will not exceed 12 months.

Our College is seeking an experienced and capable educator to take on the role of Head of Student Services, locally known as Dean of Students, with a key responsibility for leading the Year 8 Wellbeing Curriculum and supporting the team of Year 8 teachers. This role requires a relational, proactive and highly organised leader who is committed to fostering a positive, inclusive, and safe school culture.

The successful candidate will nurture strong and respectful relationships across the school community, working closely with students, teachers, parents, and external partners to support holistic student wellbeing and engagement.

Wellbeing Leadership
* Lead the development, delivery and ongoing improvement of the Year 8 wellbeing curriculum.
* Support, mentor and guide Year 8 teachers to ensure consistent, effective wellbeing practices across the cohort.
* Promote a culture of belonging, inclusivity and positive behaviour that aligns with the school's values and student wellbeing framework.
Student Support & Engagement
* Build positive, supportive relationships with students that encourage personal responsibility, resilience and engagement.
* Develop and implement tailored intervention strategies for students requiring additional wellbeing or behavioural support.
* Work collaboratively with families to address student needs, provide guidance and strengthen home‐school partnerships.
Monitoring & Data‐Informed Practice
* Monitor individual and cohort trends in attendance, behaviour and uniform.
* Analyse wellbeing and engagement data to inform planning and early intervention.
* Design and implement both individual and school‐wide strategies to promote high attendance, positive behaviour and consistent student presentation.
Community & Collaborative Practice
* Work closely with teachers, support staff and school leaders to ensure a cohesive approach to student wellbeing.
* Act as a key contact for parents regarding Year 8 student wellbeing, ensuring communication is timely, empathetic and solution‐focused.
* Engage with community organisations and services when supporting students with additional needs.
Required Skills & Attributes
* Demonstrated ability to build and sustain positive, professional relationships with young people, families and colleagues.
* Strong understanding of wellbeing frameworks, adolescent development and inclusive education practices.
* Capacity to lead teams, coach others and foster professional growth.
* Proven skill in managing sensitive situations with discretion, empathy and clear judgement.
* Ability to use data to identify trends, support decision‐making and implement targeted strategies.
* Excellent communication, organisation and problem‐solving skills.
Qualifications & Experience
* Relevant teaching qualification and current teacher registration (or eligibility to register).
* Demonstrated experience in wellbeing leadership, pastoral care or similar student support roles.
* Experience working with middle years learners is highly desirable.
