Nurse Unit Manager - Medical Oncology (Ward 3A)

* Full-time (1.0 EFT) ongoing role | immediate start

We are currently seeking an experienced Nurse Unit Manager to lead our Medical Oncology Ward (Ward 3A), an acute 32-bed inpatient unit dedicated to the care of patients with complex medical oncology needs. About the role

As the Nurse Unit Manager on Ward 3A, you'll play a vital leadership role within an exceptional multidisciplinary team, overseeing the delivery of top-tier care to patients throughout their cancer journey. From diagnosis to treatment, symptom management, and end-of-life care, you’ll be at the forefront of patient care, leading a team that’s committed to excellence.

A regular day will see you:

1. Lead and inspire the nursing team on Ward 3A, providing day-to-day guidance and support
2. Work closely, and take a leadership role, within a multidisciplinary team to ensure holistic, world-class patient care
3. Oversee the delivery of exceptional, compassionate care to a diverse patient population
4. Manage clinical care across a variety of oncology treatments, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and radiotherapy
5. Champion continuous quality improvement, focusing on patient safety, outcomes, and satisfaction
6. Mentor and develop nursing staff, helping them to grow and reach their full potential
7. Monitor KPIs and manage financial performance for Ward 3A, ensuring efficient resource allocation, cost management, and alignment with budgetary targets while maintaining high-quality patient care

Position Summary

The Nurse Unit Manager is recognized as the leader of the nursing team, exemplifying the core values of Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre through strong leadership, collaboration, and effective management of clinical nursing and support staff within Ward 3A. In this role, the Nurse Unit Manager ensures the delivery of evidence-based, patient-centered nursing care that meets professional, organizational, legal, and ethical standards, ultimately optimizing health outcomes for the community.

This leadership position also includes fostering a positive and inclusive team culture, driving innovation and continuous improvement, and ensuring a safe and supportive working environment for staff. The Nurse Unit Manager is responsible for effectively managing financial resources, supporting professional development, and championing quality initiatives.

Unit Overview:

Ward 3A is a 32-bed acute inpatient unit dedicated to the care of patients with complex medical oncology needs. This ward provides treatment and care for individuals with a range of cancers. Treatment modalities include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapies, and supportive care for a diverse range of oncology conditions. Ward 3A is actively involved in clinical trials and fosters a culture of learning and clinical excellence.

Education


Skills

* AHPRA Registration – Division One.
* Minimum three years’ experience in an associate leadership or management role.
* Post graduate qualifications in cancer nursing or equivalent.
* Well-developed communication & organizational skills.
* Demonstrated commitment to patient centered care and evidence-based practice in health care service delivery.
* Demonstrated ability and regular usage of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
* Previous experience in a Nurse Unit Manager role.
* Master’s degree in nursing or management equivalent.
* An understanding of and experience with developing evidence-based practice.
* Demonstrated involvement in professional activities and organizations.
* Experience in conducting unit-based quality improvement activities.
* Ability to implement, lead and support change.
