Primary objective
As a member of the HUB Pathology Group work team, positively contribute to the provision of a timely, efficient, cost
effective and high-quality service to the Department of Health and public of the Northern Territory.
Context statement
Operational needs require the recruitment of an individual with knowledge/skills in Multidisciplinary Pathology to work
within the local HUB Pathology Group work team, participating in a shift and on-call roster as required. The Hub Group
includes laboratories in Palmerston, Gove, Katherine and Tennant Creek. This role will be based at Katherine District Hospital
and will not require rotations to other sites. The position maps to CF6 on the Northern Territory Public Sector Framework
document.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Under minimal direct supervision, prioritise and analyse pathology specimens in the multi-disciplinary area using a range
of developed technical skills and laboratory analysers. Supervise and train more junior staff.
2. Authorise results and provide appropriate clinical advice to junior staff and external clients.
3. Perform equipment preventative maintenance, and monitor availability of reagents and consumables in use and
initiating ordering as required.
4. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being
undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
Essential
1. Education and Qualifications: Possession of a degree in Medical Laboratory Science, or equivalent is mandatory.
2. Work History: Previous work experience in pathology or other laboratory with analytical procedures and protocols closely
aligned to those in use in a multi-disciplinary pathology laboratory is mandatory. Previous experience in Microbiology and
Blood Transfusion disciplines is highly desirable.
1. Knowledge and Skills: Demonstrated ability to assist with the delivery of training and provide clinically useful commentary
on pathology results to more junior pathology staff and other health professionals. Knowledge of pre-analytical, analytical
and post analytical factors impacting on the provision of clinically useful results is also required. Ability to perform higher
level technical procedures and actively monitor stock levels in daily use to initiate ordering in a timely manner.
