Our District Emergency Departments see a combined total of nearly 150,000 patients per year. We have access to most specialities within our region, including general, trauma and sub-specialty surgery, general and sub-specialty medicine, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology and mental health.
The ISLHD Emergency Departments are accredited by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) for ED training with Wollongong Hospital as a major centre for training since 2022.
ISLHD runs a successful Registrar teaching program with a dedicated education team that consistently achieves Fellowship examination success. ISLHD EDs are served by the ISHEC- Simulation centre and provide a Special Skills Term in Simulation Medicine training for ED trainees. It is also has an Ultrasound Special Skills Term for ED trainees. Further opportunities for teaching includes medical students from the local University of Wollongong Graduate School of Medicine through to the ACEM Emergency Medicine Certificate and Diploma. We also offer simulation, research and service development opportunities via these resources.

Shoalhaven Memorial Hospital is the main referral hospital for the Shoalhaven region, providing emergency care, medical, surgical and orthopaedic services. The hospital has an Intensive Care Unit focusing on high dependency and coronary patients, Children's Ward and Maternity Unit, as well as a purpose-built regional Cancer Care Centre.
The hospital is currently undergoing a significant $440M redevelopment that will redefine how healthcare is delivered within the Region. Once complete in mid-2026, the new seven-storey Acute Services Building and refurbishments on the current hospital site will bring a focus on career development. allowing you to grow your career, acquire new skills and advance professionally as the hospital continues to develop. Selection Criteria:
* Specialist registration or eligible for specialist registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
* Fellowship of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (FACEM) and/or equivalent specialist recognition, or eligible to receive FACEM and/or specialist recognition.
* Evidence of continuing medical education and self-monitoring/audit practices consistent with the scope of practice requirements of the position.
* Proven capacity and/or experience in the provision of effective high quality services, demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position including evidence of participation in quality improvement activities relevant to the specialty.
* Demonstrated commitment to teaching with experience in teaching both undergraduate and post graduate students and other staff of the hospital.
* Demonstrate the skills and attitudes appropriate as a Senior Medical Practitioner including modelling a high standard of professional behaviour to junior medical staff.
* Demonstrated ability to work effectively and harmoniously with medical and other health services colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients, colleagues, and staff and to work as an effective member of the clinical team across multiple sites.
* Demonstrated experience in and commitment to research relevant to the role and needs of the Department.
