Primary objective
Under the guidance of the Director of Legal Services and as part of a team, provide legal support to the Legal Services Unit.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide para-legal support to the Director Legal Services.
2. Assist with the preparation of litigated and coronial matters.
3. Conduct claims matters for the Department's Motor Vehicle Accidents.
4. Be responsible for the production of documents under summonses, subpoenas, notices to produce and the like.
5. Assist with preparation of statutory instruments, including drafting instructions for Office of Parliamentary Counsel.
6. Conduct research as required.
7. Assist with preparation of short form agreements and notices.
8. Assist with preparation of briefings to the Minister, Chief Executive Officer and Division Heads as required.
9. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being
undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Formal education, training or relevant experience in a legal or related field.
1. Ability to understand and apply legal concepts, principles and practices with good research and interpretation skills.
2. Experience in preparation of quality written briefs, submissions and legal correspondence.
3. Ability to develop a sound working knowledge of Northern Territory legislation relevant to the health system.
4. Ability to communicate in a professional manner in both written and oral forms.
5. Ability to analyse issues and to work with limited supervision as part of a small team.
6. Demonstrated organisational and time management skills relevant to a legal environment.
7. Demonstrated ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
8. Experience in computer use, especially word processing in a Windows environment and database use/management.
9. Ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures.
Desirable
1. A knowledge of the Department and its functions and services provided.
