Community Engagement Worker - Safe Night Out Airlie Beach
Anglicare North Queensland is seeking Community Engagement Workers to join our Safe Night Out Airlie Beach team.
The Safe Night Out Program provides frontline outreach and Rest & Recovery support within the Airlie Beach Safe Night Precinct. The role focuses on reducing harm, supporting vulnerable and intoxicated patrons and helping create a safer night-time environment for the community.
This is a hands‐on frontline role working directly with people impacted by alcohol and other substances, mental health challenges, vulnerability and crisis situations. Staff provide practical support, first aid, hydration, de‐escalation, emotional support and referrals to appropriate services while working closely with Queensland Police, Queensland Ambulance Service, venue security and other local stakeholders.
Shift hours are Friday and Saturday nights from 10:45pm to 3:30am, including public holidays and approved extended trading nights.
As a Community Engagement Worker within the Safe Night Out team, you will provide direct outreach and Rest & Recovery support to people within the Airlie Beach Safe Night Precinct who may be intoxicated, vulnerable, distressed or impacted by alcohol and other substances.
The role involves:
* Providing harm reduction, first aid and emotional support within your scope of practice
* Supporting intoxicated or vulnerable patrons to safely rest, recover and reconnect with safe supports
* Responding to incidents within the precinct and assisting with de‐escalation where safe to do so
* Monitoring patron wellbeing and escalating concerns to emergency services where required
* Working collaboratively with Queensland Police, Queensland Ambulance Service, venue security and local businesses
* Conducting assertive outreach patrols within the precinct
* Assisting with referrals to health, crisis and community support services
* Maintaining professional boundaries, accurate data collection and safe work practices
* Assisting with set up, pack down, restocking first aid kits and maintaining operational equipment
* Working within ANQL policies, Safe Night Precinct Guidelines and first aid scope of practice
This role requires staff to work confidently in fast paced public environments during late night and early morning hours while maintaining a calm, professional and non‐judgemental approach.
To be successful in this role you will have:
* Experience working within the community services sector, youth work, mental health, homelessness, AOD or crisis response environments
* Experience working with people impacted by alcohol and other substances
* Hands on first aid experience and confidence responding to medical or welfare incidents in community settings
* Other relevant medical, nursing, emergency response or allied health experience highly regarded
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport quickly
* Ability to remain calm under pressure and respond appropriately in challenging situations
* Understanding of harm minimisation, public intoxication, mental health and trauma informed practice
* Ability to work collaboratively with emergency services, security personnel and community stakeholders
* Strong professional boundaries and sound judgement
* Ability to work safely within public late-night environments
* Good administration, reporting and computer skills
* Experience working with First Nations people and diverse communities highly regarded
* Current First Aid and CPR Certificate
* Blue Card (QLD Working with Children Check)
* Current National Criminal History Check
* QLD Driver Licence Class C or equivalent
* Availability to work Friday and Saturday nights, public holidays and approved extended trading hours
* Ability to work as part of a team in outreach and public safety settings
