Offer description

Independent Person - Shepparton, Kyabram, Tatura or surrounding suburbs

Centre for Multicultural Youth (CMY) – Shepparton VIC

The Youth Referral and Independent Person Program (YRIPP) is looking for volunteers to act as Independent Persons (IPs).

When a young person is in police custody and a parent or guardian cannot attend, YRIPP volunteers step in. As an IP, you'll ensure the young person understands their rights, provide calm support during police interviews, and help level the playing field at a critical moment.

This role is not about giving legal advice; it's about being a steady, impartial presence so young people are treated fairly and with dignity. You'll also have the chance to link young people to support services that can help divert them from further offending.

What we're looking for:

- Positive communication and listening skills
- Reliability, empathy, and the ability to stay calm under pressure
- Willingness to reflect on your practice and maintain impartiality
- No prior legal knowledge required; full training and ongoing support are provided

Requirements:

- 18 years or older
- Able to commit to volunteering on a rostered basis
- Willing to complete training, a police check, and a Working with Children Check

Why volunteer?

- Make a direct impact in the lives of young people
- Gain valuable skills and experience in youth justice and community support

Join a diverse, supportive volunteer community

Category: Young People

Commitment: Regular - more than 6 months

Type Of Work: Companionship & Social Support, Mediation & Advocacy, Safety & Emergency Services

Time Required: Volunteers are required to be on-call for at least one or two 12 hour shifts per week. Volunteers are unlikely to be called to the station for every shift they are rostered on, and the average time spent at the station for each call is 3 hours. We require volunteers to have a driver's license and access to a car. Volunteers must attend the police station within 30 minutes of being called when on roster.

Training: Police Station Induction and Practice and Assessment Training
