Position Summary
Senior Emergency Registrar - starting August 2024
Austin Health is the major provider of tertiary health services, professional education and research across three campuses in the north‑east of Melbourne and statewide. The organisation is world‑renowned for its research and specialist work in cancer, liver transplantation, spinal cord injuries, neurology, endocrinology, mental health and rehabilitation.
Austin Health is an equal‑opportunity employer and is committed to attracting and retaining a diverse workforce that reflects the community we serve. Applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders are encouraged.
Emergency Medicine Registrars are invited to join our Emergency Department from August 2024.
Details of Department
Austin Emergency Department is one of Melbourne's busiest, seeing around 90 000 patients annually. Registrars will work a rotating roster that includes daytime, evening, night, weekend and public‑holiday duty. There is no on‑call component, although on‑call may occur when rotating to other departments.
We maintain strong relationships with other hospitals – including The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear, The Royal Children's, The Alfred, The Royal Melbourne, Northern Health and Cabrini – and organise additional terms at sites such as Alice Springs (ED and retrieval).
Our department hosts one of the largest Short Stay Units in Melbourne, providing a controlled environment for learning clinical medicine. The Fast Track area is staffed by advanced musculoskeletal physiotherapists, nurse practitioners and doctors, offering ample opportunities to develop procedural skills. The Emergency Department is geographically divided into Adult and Paediatric sections; registrars may work shifts in the dedicated paediatric area to complete a paediatric logbook.
The paediatric ED has provisional accreditation with ACEM as a Paediatric Emergency (PEM) training site and offers a dedicated education stream. Registrars may also pursue a PEM fellow role tailored for ACEM and RACP trainees.
Austin Emergency Department has a strong focus on toxicology, research and quality, and is one of the few EDs in Australia with a dedicated Professor / Director of EM research.
Registrars are strongly encouraged to engage in current research or to initiate their own projects, including those required for the 4.10 research component. Non‑clinical time is available for committee participation or working with EPs in various administrative roles.
Well‑being initiatives include a wellness committee (TeamED), an ED Social Club and a peer‑support programme (WEEPS) available to all staff.
Details of Position
Registrars will assess and manage patients in accordance with their level of experience. They are also expected to develop an understanding of ED resource management, including bed access, bypass avoidance strategies and interdepartmental liaison.
Registrars will supervise and educate junior staff in patient assessment and management where appropriate. At times, registrars may be called to treat patients at Mercy Hospital in emergencies that fall outside Mercy's clinical expertise.
Benefits include salary packaging and an employee assistance programme.
All appointments are contingent upon a satisfactory National Police Check conducted by Austin Health, and where necessary, a Working with Children Check.
