About the role Our Commonwealth Government client is seeking a highly motivated EL1 level data scientist to support the development of tools and solutions that enable predictive, automated, and data-informed decision-making.
The successful candidate will help promote the safe and effective use and sharing of data, and fostering collaboration between data experts and policy leaders to identify and address high-priority strategic research needs.
An initial labour hire contract until 30 June **** is on offer, with the possibility of extension.
The anticipated commencement is mid-September ****.
This opportunity is full-time and available to candidates based in Canberra, ACT.

Duties: Lead the design, development, and deployment of data science solutions across strategic projects involving data ingestion, analysis, modelling, and AI Apply techniques such as natural language processing, generative AI, and predictive modelling to deliver insights and support decision-making Collaborate across teams to build reusable methods and code, and prototype user-centred tools and technologies Conduct rapid, bespoke analytics across diverse datasets and environments Engage with business and IT stakeholders to select and enhance analytical technologies Deliverables may include scoping documents, prototypes, MVPs, production-ready solutions, technical documentation, and evaluation artefacts to measure impact Requisite skills and experience: Tertiary qualification or background in data science, statistics, computer science, AI, ML/cloud engineering, or a related field (mandatory) Experience leading data science projects and engaging with diverse stakeholders across business and IT Skilled in mentoring, capability development, and collaborative solution delivery Familiarity with Agile, DevOps, and cloud/on-prem platforms (e.g. Azure, Google Cloud) Strong communication skills and ability to translate complex data into actionable insights Desirable skills and experience: Experience with generative AI, prompt engineering, and evaluation of AI outputs Knowledge of AI ethics, bias, and risk frameworks Proficiency in Python libraries (e.g. Hugging Face, OpenVINO, llama-cpp-python, DSPy, PyTorch) and deploying open-weight LLMs via APIs Solid data engineering skills across structured and unstructured data Culture and benefits People enjoy contracting with relatbl because our business is owned and managed by people who have first-hand experience working as contractors.
