The Mornington Shire Council is a Local Government Authority providing range of services to the twenty-two islands of the Wellesley Group located 125kms north-west of Burketown, 200kms west of Karumba and 444kms from Mount Isa, in the southern section of the Gulf of Carpentaria, residing within the State of Queensland. The island is 2.5 hours flight from Cairns
The Role:
This position is responsible for effectively working as part of the Engineering Department delivering essential water and sewerage services to the council and the community.
Duties include but not limited to:
- Undertake plumbing, gas and drainage works associated with the construction, maintenance and operation of Mornington Shire Council assets,
- Organise and coordinate assigned tasks including allocation of resources,
- Provide accurate technical advice relating to plumbing and drainage works to both internal and external customers,
- Undertake water and sewerage testing and inspections as required by Council’s licences.
- Ensure all work tasks are recorded in line with Council procedures to meet regulatory requirements.
- Ensure all work complies with building codes, installation requirements and relevant legislation,
- Supervise and provide appropriate on the job training to apprentices and Trades Assistants where required,
- Assist the supervisor in testing water standards,
- Ensure timesheets are accurate and completed weekly; and
- Participate as a member of Council’s multi-skilled workforce and undertake other duties including labouring as required by operational activities or as directed by the Works Manager
- Carry out all plumbing works of a maintenance, improvement, or construction nature are carried out in compliance with current plumbing requirements and WH&S; legislation.
- In cooperation with other trades, assist in successful completion of multi-trade projects.
- Carry out other minor maintenance and improvement works where applicable.
- Completion of risk assessments and hazard identification.
- Maintain an up-to-date industry skill set including current statutory and legal requirements relative to position responsibilities in the plumbing industry.
- Coordinate and supervise the activities of a small work group which can include a labourer, apprentice and temporary staff including sub-contractors.
- To complete written records to ensure all risks are assessed and minimised and subcontractors are acting in accordance with our policies and procedures.
- Ensure that the quality of work completed to the highest standard possible satisfying the requirements of all legislative and regulatory requirements, the Trades Coordinator, Program Leader and Manager.
- To research and investigate and provide technical advice to staff as required.
- To complete purchase requisitions online when ordering materials from internal supplies or external.
- Maintain a complete and comprehensive hand tool kit sufficient to carry out required plumbing duties.
Requirements:
It is essential that the person in this position hold a relevant Plumber Drainer Gas Fitter License and a Construction Safety White Card, and/or be able to demonstrate equivalent related experience. It is also highly desirable for the person in this position to have other qualifications, such as Backflow Prevention Endorsement; Confined Space Entry; and backhoe, truck/MR and other related Queensland plant tickets and licences. You will also require a current C class Drivers Licence.
- You will need to reside on the Island for emergency callouts.
- You are required to participate in an on-call roster (only when competent)
