Starship Avionics Engineer
We are seeking a highly skilled Mechanical Engineer to join our Starship Avionics team. As a key member of this team, you will be responsible for designing and developing a cutting-edge avionics system that meets the highest standards of reliability, mass, and cost efficiency.
Key Responsibilities:
* Packaging Solutions: Design innovative packaging solutions for electro-mechanical assemblies that protect sensitive electronics from harsh launch environments.
* Thermal and Structural Analysis: Conduct thorough thermal, structural, and tolerance analysis using hand calculations and finite element analysis to ensure the integrity of our electronic systems.
* Design and Development: Participate in initial mechanical design, 3D modeling, creation of production drawings, and maintenance of design data to drive efficient product development.
* Fault Analysis: Identify and analyze failure modes of components under various conditions, including thermal, loads, vibration, and shock.
* Interface with Production Teams: Collaborate with machine shops and production teams to ensure final designs meet project goals and can be produced efficiently.
* Timeline Ownership: Own the hardware delivery timeline and success through inception, design, assembly, test, and integration.
* Design Reviews: Lead internal design reviews and participate in reviews with suppliers and customers to ensure high-quality products.
* Innovative Designs: Develop structural designs that balance weight and rate targets using innovative design and manufacturing approaches.
Bachelor's Degree and Qualifications:
* Bachelor's degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering.
* 1+ years of experience in mechanical or electromechanical design and analysis (internships and significant student project experience qualify).
Preferred Skills and Experience:
* Self-motivated individual with strong organizational, written, and oral communication skills.
* Experience with CAD and FEA software packages.
* Proficient use of hand calculations, finite element analyses (FEA), and computer-aided designs (CAD).
* Exposure to high-volume production designs with a focus on design for manufacturability.
* Understanding of structural analysis and failure modes.
* Working knowledge of thermal and structural FEA studies.
* Experience with fatigue and thermal testing of electro-mechanical assemblies.
* Solid understanding of GD&T.
* Experience working with PCB designers and exposure to PCB layout.
Additional Requirements:
* Extended hours and weekend work may be required to support critical project milestones.
