Head of Secondary Position Description

Background

Carmel School is a Modern Orthodox Zionist Jewish Day School. This means having and teaching a commitment to the tenets and practices of the traditional faith but synthesised with positive facets of the modern world. As part of its modern Orthodox ethos, an identification with the modern State of Israel as the spiritual home and geographic centre of the Jewish world is a vital part of Carmel School's culture.

Carmel School offers schooling from Kindergarten to Year 12. This position oversees all students and staff from Kindergarten to Year 6 who make up the Secondary School. The Head of Secondary reports directly to the Principal of Carmel School.

Purpose

The Head of Secondary is responsible for:


• upholding the aims and objectives of the School, working cooperatively with the Principal to achieve these objectives;


• assisting the Principal with the appointment and management of teaching staff, educational assistants and other support staff in the Secondary School;


• developing and maintaining effective communication and sound relationships with students, parents and the community;


• supporting, by attendance and participation, school activities as and when they arise;


• The leadership of the Secondary School and the management of all secondary school staff.

General Duties

Leadership & Strategy

The Head of Secondary:


• works cooperatively with the Principal and Carmel Leadership Team (CLT) to achieve the School's Purpose;


• reports regularly to the Principal on all matters, keeping them fully informed of all developments relevant or material to the School's affairs which are within the scope of the Head of Secondary's duties and responsibilities.

Educational Leadership

The Head of Secondary:


• provides clear and well-researched curriculum and pastoral leadership in the Secondary School, including the sound management of all Secondary School activities, consulting and delegating as appropriate;


• develops and maintains effective communication and sound relationships with students and parents in the Secondary School;


• leads the creation and checking of book lists for the Secondary School;


• leads the organisation of relevant calendar dates for the school calendar for the current year and for future bookings including organisation and running of events such as immunisation, NAPLAN, OLNA and mock exams;


• adopts overall responsibility for the production of and return of all relevant SCSA documents throughout the course of the year;


• coordinates SCSA moderation visits;


• holds responsibility for the overall implementation of the Australian Curriculum and any associated changes (e.g. in assessment, reporting, etc);


• liaises with parents/caregivers of students regarding subject changes and monitors and approves student subject changes;


• works to ensure the best possible outcomes for all secondary students' WACE results and ATAR scores;


• collates data and analyses students' results for an annual review which is presented to the Board;


• organises and reports on NAPLAN, OLNA and examinations in the secondary school.

Pastoral Leadership

The Head of Secondary:


• supervises and monitors the work of the Director of Student Development and Wellbeing in maintaining and promoting the cultural aims and purposes of the School;


• maintains the general discipline in the Secondary School in conjunction with the DoSDW, through the thorough implementation of the Behaviour Management Policy, communicating with appropriate parties as necessary to inform and assist students in need;


• coordinates Parent-Teacher-Student interviews;


• ensures that the School's dress code and behavioural expectations are adhered to by students;


• along with the Principal, ensures that behavioural and professional standards are adhered to by the staff;


• works with the DoSDW to ensure even distributions of secondary students to houses.

Staff Management and Development

The Head of Secondary:


• leads staff professional learning in the Secondary School;


• maintains a close working relationship and team-building approach with the Head of Primary School;


• works with the Principal on recruitment, management and termination of staff;


• monitors programs of teaching, learning and assessment;


• oversees all relevant report comments;


• oversees the organisation of relief teaching staff;


• cooperates with universities regarding pre-service teachers and the organisation of practicums;


• leads Secondary School staff meetings and provides minutes of those meetings to the Principal ;


• oversees the co-ordination of Workplace Learning and VET programs, and the preparations necessary for such programs;


• prepares and distributes information to all staff for new students commencing during the course of a school year;


• ensures that Secondary School staff programmes of work have been submitted when requested and that they meet the required standard and adhere to SCSA requirements;


• oversees the submission, checking and storage of all examination papers;


• organises annual performance appraisals of secondary teaching and support staff;


• ensures the general day to day management of Secondary School staff is carried out including dealing with grievance issues, network meetings and professional learning (in consultation with the Principal);


• oversees secondary staff welfare.

Administrative Leadership

The Head of Secondary:


• assists the Principal in the appointment and management of teaching staff, educational assistants and other support staff in the Secondary School;


• supervises the work of secondary school teaching staff through the development of the duty roster, sub-school timetables, class lists and in general support of teachers' roles;


• creates and distributes the secondary school timetable;


• reports to the Principal on all matters relevant to the Secondary School;


• attends Carmel Leadership Team meetings and any related meetings and relevant profession learning opportunities;


• reviews and implements policies and procedures in the Secondary School;


• monitors and supervises the completion of class rolls, student reports, teacher programs, lEP's, relief teachers, cover for staff leave;


• liaises with the Director of Enrolments to follow due process for students arriving at and leaving the School;


• in consultation with the Principal, develops and updates relevant sub-school handbooks, policies, booklists, school diaries, year book submissions and grant applications;


• in consultation with the Business Manager and Principal, manages budgetary requirements and requisitions within set budget figures.

Representation and Promotion

The Head of Secondary:


• organises and oversees, in conjunction with the Principal, the running of student orientation days;


• supports, by attendance and participation, school activities and out of school functions including staff meetings, CLT meetings and committees, graduations/valedictories as and when they arise;


• in conjunction with other relevant staff, seeks to increase student numbers and participates in enrolment interviews and offers of places in the Secondary School;


• carries out any other duties as required by the Principal.
