Job Title: Principal Legal Officer, Commercial Law
Responsibilities
* Supervising and providing second counselling to lawyers in the team, as well as personally managing matters of a more technical or sensitive nature.
* Ensuring tasks are completed efficiently and adept at moving issues forward by engaging stakeholders effectively, communicating clearly, and leveraging subject matter expertise.
* Adopting a pragmatic approach to problem‑solving and delivering exceptional customer service to clients.
* Leading a team: developing staff, setting goals, and driving performance through effective performance management, including delegating work appropriately and measuring performance outcomes.
* Collaborating with three other Principal Legal Officers in the Commercial Law Section to manage workflow, report on progress, and host and contribute to team and branch meetings.
* Working closely with Senior Executive Service (SES) members to ensure proper briefing and escalation, providing support to the team and to oneself.
Qualifications
* A degree in law from an Australian university or a comparable overseas degree recognised in Australia for admission to practice.
* A Practising Certificate or eligibility to attain one.
* At least three years of post‑qualification experience.
* Specialised knowledge and experience in commercial law advisory work, preferably with experience in government procurement and contracting, grants, and property.
* High‑quality management and leadership skills for effective management and development of senior legal officers and legal officers.
* Strong technical legal advice writing, second counselling, and research skills.
* Sophisticated relationship management, communication, and negotiation skills.Ability to work under pressure and demonstrate agility, flexibility, and responsiveness in managing competing priorities and tight timeframes.
Salary
Salary Information: The position of Principal Legal Officer is classified with a salary range of $157, to $177,, plus % superannuation (with part‑time pro‑rata adjustments).

Eligibility
Eligibility requirements include Australian citizenship and the successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting Level 1 (AGSVA) security clearance.

Additional clearances may be required for ABF Workers and Home Affairs Workers, including an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC) or an Onboarding Check, as determined necessary by the delegate.
