We are seeking a dynamic and engaging Wheelwrights Demonstrator to join our talented team at the Sovereign Hill Museums Association. In this unique role, you will create an immersive historical experience for our visitors by demonstrating 19th-century wheelwrighting skills, preserving the authenticity and the spirit of traditional craftsmanship. Duties & Responsibilities
1. Perform live demonstrations of traditional wheelwrighting processes, showing visitors how different machinery and tools are used and explaining the various stages of the wheel production.
2. Lead interactive sessions, sharing interesting historic context and answering visitor's questions related to 19th-century practices.
3. Maintain the authenticity of the demonstrations, ensuring they accurately represent the time period and the profession.
4. Perform daily maintenance and clean-up of the wheel shop to ensure the safety and cleanliness of the demonstration area.
5. Assist in maintaining the tools, machinery and premises used in demonstrations.
6. Participate in staff meetings and training to further develop interpretive and historical knowledge.
7. Establish positive relationships with visitors, enhancing their overall experience at the museum.
8. Collaborate with other museum staff and contribute to special events as required.
Required Qualifications
1. High school diploma or equivalent; further education in history, theatre, museum studies or a related field, is desirable.
2. Demonstrated experience in crafts or experience in wheelwrighting or historical interpretation would be an advantage.
3. Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
4. A passion for history and a willingness to acquire and impart historical knowledge.
5. Ability to engage audiences of all ages and backgrounds in interactive learning.
6. Solid teamwork and cooperation skills.
7. Flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and special events as required.
8. Physical fitness, as the role involves standing, lifting and manipulating heavy traditional tools.
