**Career Medical Officer in Emergency Medicine**
**Maitland Hospital, Lower Hunter Valley NSW**

**_We are looking for Career Medical Officers interested in long term diverse employment with Maitland Hospital Emergency Department with an ongoing commitment to training and education outside of the ACEM (Australasian College for Emergency Medicine) format ultimately to develop and support a person in becoming a respected and senior member of the Emergency Department medical Team._**
**About the role**:
The post has been structured with educational and procedural requirements; these can be individualised based on prior experience. One shift in 8 will be allocated as a non-clinical shift to allow for some of these requirements to be progressed. This shift can be utilised to attend a course, spend the day in theatres improving on airway skills, in the ED office working on an audit or planned teaching as examples. It is expected and highly supported that the SMO enrol and aim to complete the ACEM Emergency Medicine Certificate program during the initial year of employment.
Maitland Hospital Emergency Department is an urban district unit which sees approximately 150 patients /day with30% of these being Paediatric cases. We have an admission rate of 25%, including general medicine, cardiology, general surgery, orthopaedics, paediatrics, mental health and Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
Maitland Hospital Emergency Department acts as the referral hospital for eight GP run rural hospitals, which have a variety of facilities available for investigating patients. An important part of this post will be to develop management skills for the safe and appropriate movement of these referrals across the Local Health District.
The post involves the participation in a 7 day a week/24hr roster across Maitland Hospital. Each clinical shift is 10hr long. After the 5th year of consecutive employment, the night shift component is removed.
**The role of the Career Medical Officer in the Emergency Department is to**:
- Provide clinical care under the direction of the supervising or on call consultant to support the effective management of patients
- Contribute to processes to improve the continuity of clinical care, coordination of services, patient handover, and discharge planning during and after hospitalisation
- Contribute to effective clinical management, transition to community care and discharge planning by: Encouraging effective handover procedures for hospital patients by establishing processes between shifts and between teams & monitoring use and function of handover systems
- Demonstrate leadership in the effective co-ordination of care of hospital patients, by facilitating communication and coordination between specialty, administrative and community services groups
- Support multidisciplinary team care by contributing to team building, mentoring and training
- Support members of care teams by providing clinical advice and encouraging co-ordination of care of hospital patients through effective and timely communication
