Where you'll be working:
The John Hunter Hospital (JHH) is the major tertiary teaching hospital and referral centre for the Hunter New England Local Health District. Located in the coastal city of Newcastle, JHH is home to one of the busiest emergency departments in NSW and provides a broad range of medical and surgical services to a diverse population of more than 900,000 people.
The hospital is currently undergoing an exciting transformation through the John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct redevelopment, including the construction of a new Acute Services Building scheduled for completion in May 2026. As part of this dynamic and expanding environment, the Security team plays a vital role in maintaining a safe and supportive hospital campus for staff, patients and visitors.
You’ll be part of a large, experienced security team working across the JHH campus, including areas such as the Emergency Department and the co-located Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit.
About the role:
As a Security Officer at John Hunter Hospital, you will provide essential security services across the hospital campus. This is a fast-paced and highly visible role where your professionalism, situational awareness and communication skills will make a real difference.
A typical shift may involve responding to requests for assistance from staff, patients and visitors, attending duress alarms, and supporting clinical teams during Code Black responses. You’ll provide a reassuring security presence in high-activity areas such as the Emergency Department and assist in managing challenging or potentially aggressive situations while working closely with clinical staff.
No two days are the same, and your ability to remain calm under pressure and work collaboratively with healthcare professionals will be key to success in this role.

* Strong customer service skills and a professional, approachable manner
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
* The ability to follow clinical direction and work effectively within a multidisciplinary environment
* Confidence in managing and de-escalating aggressive or challenging behaviours
* Sound judgement and the ability to remain calm in high-pressure situations

Experience in healthcare or similar environments is highly regarded, however many aspects of the role can be learned with the right attitude and willingness to develop.
Support and training:
You won’t be stepping into the role alone. New Security Officers receive structured support and guidance to help them settle into the team and develop confidence in the role.
Support includes:

* On-shift mentoring and guidance from Senior Security Officers during your orientation period
* Team support from experienced security colleagues across the campus
* Mandatory Prevention and Management of Violence and Aggression (PMVA) training
* Ongoing learning opportunities through My Health Learning (MHL)
* Annual Performance Development Reviews (PDRs) to support feedback, development and career growth

Requirements:

* Current NSW Security Licence 1A including Senior First Aid Certificate with a Certificate II in Security Operations.
* Eligibility to drive in NSW.
* Ability to work a 24/7 roster.
