About Our Team
The Alfred Pathology Service (APS) is key to providing integrated and timely diagnostic capabilities as part of the largest public pathology laboratory network in Victoria. APS conducts all pathology testing for multiple hospitals, offering a comprehensive range of services through five specialized units: Anatomical Pathology, Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, Microbiology, and Human Molecular Pathology. The service supports the local community while addressing complex state-wide needs, including trauma, organ transplantation and HIV/AIDS diagnostics. APS is committed to education and professional development, providing opportunities for students and clinicians. The service collaborates with various research institutions. Alfred Health and Monash Health have established a partnership delivering pathology services at Western Health and other sites.
Position Summary
The Laboratory Scientist in this role will perform a wide range of routine Microbiology tests unsupervised (after a period of training) and participate in rosters and out-of-hours commitments of a microbiology laboratory. Duties include day-to-day quality activities, equipment maintenance, and participation in quality assurance programs. The role may involve general housekeeping duties such as stocktake of consumables, reagent preparation and unpacking of deliveries. The position is primarily based at the New Footscray Hospital laboratory but may be required to work at other campuses across the Shared Pathology Service, including Prahran. If based at a site with a 24/7 service, participation in a 24/7 rotating roster and on-call roster is required.
About You
Qualifications Required:
 * Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine with a major in Microbiology (or recognised equivalent) is required.
Experience And Skills Required:
 * Experience working in a diagnostic microbiology laboratory.
 * Previous experience with troubleshooting automated laboratory analysers.
 * Demonstrated verbal, written communication and organisational skills.
 * Computer proficiency and good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
 * Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
 * Class C driver's license and willingness to travel to the various WH and Prahran sites as needed.
