An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Unix Engineer to join our Department of Defence Centralised Processing (CP) Project team.

In this role you will provide day‑to‑day operational support for Unix/Linux platforms across the organisation’s production and non‑production environments. The role focuses on incident resolution, service restoration, routine maintenance, and contributing to continuous improvement of system reliability and performance. Working within a BAU support team, the engineer ensures stable, secure, and efficient operation of core infrastructure services.

Key Responsibilities

* Respond to and resolve incidents, service requests, and problem tickets related to Unix/Linux systems within agreed SLAs.

* Perform routine system administration tasks including user management, patching, log review, and filesystem maintenance.

* Monitor system health and performance, escalating issues where required.

* Investigate recurring issues and contribute to root‑cause analysis activities.

* Recommend improvements to reduce operational noise and enhance system stability.

* Support senior engineers in implementing remediation actions and infrastructure enhancements.

* Participate in on‑call rotations and after‑hours support as required.

* Support backup, recovery, and failover procedures.

* Assist in maintaining compliance with organisational security and operational standards.

Skills & Experience

* Proficiency in Unix/Linux administration (experience in RHEL, with experience in AIX or Solaris highly desirable).

* Experience with IBM Power Series hardware or Oracle UltraSPARC series hardware.

* Experience with Virtualisation platforms VMWare or RHEL OpenShift highly regarded.

* Experience with Satellite and Ansible Automation platform highly regarded.

* Experience with shell scripting and ansible playbooks for automation of routine tasks.

* Understanding of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, routing).

* Strong analytical and troubleshooting capability.

* Clear communication with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.

* Ability to follow established processes while identifying opportunities for improvement.

* Collaborative mindset, working effectively within a team environment.

Applicants must have an existing NV1 or NV2 security clearance.
