Join to apply for the Crown Prosecutor, ST HELENA GOVERNMENT role at Guardian Jobs
Enjoying unique lifestyle opportunities, St Helena Island is a self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom. It forms part of the wider British Overseas Territory of St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. Although better placed to develop economically and socially as a result of opening our international airport in 2017, we are not at the stage of self-sufficiency and therefore remain dependent on UK government aid.
The island’s team of Law Officers is currently made up of the Attorney General, Senior Crown Counsel (Civil), two Crown Counsels (Contracts), Crown Counsel (Civil) and two Legislative Drafters and PA support officers. In addition, we are recruiting a Solicitor General, a Legislative Commissioner, and a Paralegal.
You will be responsible for conducting all criminal matters in St Helena, Ascension, and Tristan da Cunha under the Attorney General. This includes:
* Advising the police;
* Making reasoned, properly recorded, and evidenced charging decisions;
* Preparing indictments, summonses, and notices;
* Ensuring all disclosure obligations are met and reviewed continually.
You will undertake the majority of advocacy and representation, and supervise others where advocacy is performed by others. You will develop a detailed knowledge of our Constitutions (for St Helena, Ascension, and Tristan da Cunha) and relevant laws, adhering to the Crown Prosecution Service's Codes of Practice and local arrangements.
Additional responsibilities include providing advice, advocacy, and support on non-police prosecution work such as:
* Inquests;
* Tax, Customs & Excise;
* Immigration matters.
You will act as Acting Attorney General as needed, represent the Attorney General on relevant committees, conduct legal research, review legislation, and supervise legal staff involved in criminal work. Your advice on criminal law matters will be highly valued.
Qualified as a UK or Commonwealth solicitor or barrister with several years of PQE, you have substantial criminal case experience, advocacy skills, including jury trials, and have managed your own caseload.
We seek candidates who demonstrate fairness, integrity, and teamwork, and who can contribute to community and capacity development in St Helena through knowledge sharing and skills transfer.
Our Benefits Package Includes:
* An International Supplement (details on our website);
* Relocation Allowances (details on our website);
* Annual Pension Contribution of 7.5%;
* 30 days annual leave plus Public Holidays.
