Make a lasting impact in one of Australia’s Most Unique Communities located in the rainforest between the Douglas Shire and Cooktown
The Council
Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire Council is a proud and resilient community located in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Bloomfield Valley. With deep cultural roots and a population of around 400, the Council plays a vital role in delivering essential services, infrastructure, and housing, while supporting health, education, and employment outcomes. The community is governed by a Mayor and four Councillors and is bounded by Cook and Douglas Shires.
Following the devastation of Tropical Cyclone Jasper in December 2023, the Council has secured significant funding and is now focused on recovery and renewal. With a newly adopted Corporate Plan and an operating budget of $9.5M, the Council is ready to move forward with a clear vision and a strong commitment to cultural respect, community engagement, and sustainable development.
About the Role
This is a hands-on leadership role where cultural respect, community engagement, and operational excellence go hand-in-hand. As CEO, you will be the primary link between elected Councillors and Council staff, responsible for strategic planning, governance, financial management, and workforce leadership. You will oversee the delivery of major capital works, including a new administration building, housing relocation, and the redevelopment of key community assets.
The role demands a leader who can navigate complex regulatory environments and foster a positive workplace culture. You will be expected to lead disaster response efforts, manage stakeholder relationships, and ensure Council operates with transparency, accountability, and integrity. This is a unique opportunity to lead with purpose and help shape a future that honours the past.
About You
You are an experienced QLD local government executive—ideally a current CEO with a strong track record in strategic leadership, governance, and financial stewardship or a Director ready to step up who has had some experience in an Acting CEO capacity. You understand the nuances of Indigenous governance and cultural protocols and have worked closely with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Your leadership style is inclusive, empathetic, and action-oriented, and you are known for your ability to ‘get things done.’
You bring emotional intelligence, cultural competence, and a genuine desire to make a difference. With strong interpersonal and communication skills, you will build trust across all levels of Council and the community and are comfortable mentoring staff, supporting elected representatives, and leading with clarity and purpose. Your presence in the community will be visible, approachable, and deeply valued.
Why this Role?
This is a rare prospect to lead with impact in one of Australia’s most geographically stunning and culturally significant regions. Whether you are a seasoned CEO or ready to step up, this role offers the chance to make a tangible difference in a community that values connection, resilience, and leadership. With a generous salary package, a fully furnished home, and the chance to live near the majestic Bloomfield Falls, this is more than a job - it is a calling.
