The Royal Hobart Hospital and Department of Geriatric Medicine are seeking qualified applicants for a Staff Specialist – Geriatric Medicine vacancy.
The Role
The Aged Care department at the Royal Hobart Hospital has 106 inpatient beds for acute older persons' care across 3 sites in central Hobart, including 60 older persons' acute care beds, 36 subacute beds (GEM), and 10 beds for patients with behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia requiring slow stream rehabilitation; including an additional 12 bed GEM at Home service. There is strategic vision for an Older Person's Emergency Department geriatrician role. The Aged Care specialists provide inpatient, outpatient, and outreach services, including a consultative service and shared care orthogeriatrics model for 10-20 patients, as well as a robust educational program.
Clinics include memory, falls and balance and movement disorders. Geriatric oncology, continence and pain clinics are also seen by individual specialists. All clinics involve Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment and are supported by a dedicated aged care clinic nurse and closely associated with the Community Rehabilitation Unit co-located on site. Clinics include a mix of face-to-face and telehealth consultations, with an option to participate in regional TAZREACH Outreach clinics. There are opportunities to pursue research interests and experiences as part of this role. The department provides a strong education program to undergraduates, allied health, nursing and postgraduates. There is strong collegiality, stability, and energy within a group of 18 geriatricians.
Team and Structure
The aged care department has an establishment of 9 FTE registrar positions, including up to 4 advanced trainees in geriatrics, with the remainder being registrars in Geriatric Medicine. These positions are supported by 6 interns in acute geriatrics and 1 intern in orthogeriatrics, plus 6 resident medical officers across subacute services.

Remuneration and Conditions
Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award. A remuneration package comprising base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiated with the successful applicant based on clinical experience and seniority. Base salary points range from $216,300 (Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1) to $296,640 (Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 11) with further salary increments available. Access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range ($300,216 – $310,389) is subject to criteria outlined in the Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award.
* Allowances calculated on the salaried incremental point may include: motor vehicle allowance, Continuing Professional Development Allowance, accommodation services, on-call allowance, and other allowances per the current Award.
* Relocation support up to $25,000 (economy airfares) and up to 12 weeks accommodation via accommodation services.

Details of Appointment
Fixed-term, full-time or part-time day work (with on-call), up to 76 hours per fortnight, commencing as soon as possible for 12 months. The selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar vacancies for a period of twelve months.
* Holds specialist registration; or
* Registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) on the specialist pathway; or
* Registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) with a recognised overseas specialist qualification and sufficient experience in the specialty.
Pre-employment checks include criminal history checks in specified areas and other disciplinary checks as required.
