Maintenance officer (buildings)

Ipswich
University of Southern Queensland
Green Spaces Operative
Posted: 8 March
Offer description

This is an exciting opportunity to join Facilities Management within the Corporate Services portfolio at the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ) - a team that plays a critical, behind-the-scenes role in enabling the University's teaching, research and community engagement. Facilities Management delivers a diverse range of services across multiple campuses, from building and infrastructure maintenance to asset management, compliance and capital works support.

As part of this collaborative and service-driven environment, you'll contribute to maintaining safe, sustainable and high-performing facilities that support thousands of students, staff and visitors every day. It's a chance to be part of a professional team that values practical expertise, continuous improvement and innovation in how we care for and enhance our built environment.

Who you are

You're a hands‐on, reliable maintenance professional who takes pride in keeping buildings safe, functional, and well‐presented. With solid experience in general building maintenance and minor repairs, you're proactive in spotting issues before they become problems and responsive when urgent matters arise. You work well both independently and as part of a team, communicate clearly with trades and stakeholders, and always put safety first. Organised, practical, and solutions‐focused, you enjoy a varied workday and thrive in an environment where your skills directly contribute to a well‐maintained campus community.

What you'll do

As a Maintenance Officer (Buildings), you'll be hands‐on in keeping our campuses running smoothly, safely and efficiently. Each day, you'll deliver a mix of routine and reactive maintenance, from minor repairs, patching and painting to drain clearing, gutter maintenance, water isolation and lock adjustments. You'll conduct regular building inspections, log and complete work orders in our Facilities Management system, and respond quickly to urgent or emergency requests to minimise disruption to learning and research activities. Working closely with trades teams, contractors and vendors, you'll help coordinate specialised works, support safe site access, manage maintenance stores and maintain accurate records to ensure compliance and continuous improvement.

In your first 6–12 months, you'll build strong campus knowledge, contribute to preventative maintenance planning, and be recognised as a reliable, solutions‐focused team member who keeps issues moving and facilities performing at their best. This is a role where your proactive approach and practical skills will have visible, daily impact—while opening pathways to broaden your technical capability and grow your career within a diverse and supportive facilities environment.

What will help you succeed

To thrive as a Maintenance Officer (Buildings), you'll bring practical building maintenance experience, a strong safety focus and a proactive, solutions‐oriented mindset. You enjoy hands‐on work, take pride in quality outcomes and understand the importance of responsive service in a busy customer‐focused environment.

* Experience in general building maintenance, handyperson or facilities support roles, including minor repairs and installations.
* Sound knowledge of safe work practices and the ability to operate tools and equipment safely and effectively.
* Ability to undertake physical tasks associated with maintenance work.
* Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and accurately complete work orders and maintenance records.
* Clear communication skills and a collaborative approach when working with trades teams, contractors and stakeholders.
Experience that will set you apart:
* Experience working in large or multi‐site facilities, such as education, health, government or commercial environments.
* Exposure to facilities management or computerised maintenance management systems (CMMS).
* Involvement in preventative maintenance programs and compliance reporting.

Above all, you'll be dependable, adaptable and motivated to contribute to a safe, well‐maintained campus environment—understanding that your work directly supports the learning, teaching and research activities of the University community.
